Can anyone recommend software to design carpentry projects? Nothing crazy like fancy chairs. But basic framing, trusses and rafters, work benches, firewood sheds, etc.

Sketchup. I've used it for years. It's free, easy to pick up, and very fast if you're dealing with basic shapes. Spend the extra time to learn the keyboard shortcuts.

Yes, Sketchup is pretty good and I also would like to recommend that.

I use sketchup as well.
A more sophisticated "free" software is Fusion360 made by AutoCAD. Students get free access to it.

And if you’re like me and just can’t get into sketchup, try tinkercad.

I know you asked for software, but I still like graph paper and a pencil.
