I'm not familiar with that particular vehicle, but any small 4WD vehicle will have CV axles for the front, which means that the wheel bearings are pretty similar to any other car with the same sort of drivetrain.

Mostly, it depends on how the races are.  If the bearing races are shot (likely), it requires a bearing puller and installation tool, and possibly a torch (propane should be fine).

If you've done a lot of car work before, it's a stinky, annoying pain, but not really that difficult.  If not, pay someone to do it.

DH has not done a lot of car work before. Only changing brake discs, installing a towbar, changing light bulbs and some other smaller stuff.

Sounds like we should pay us out of it.

What would the comparable American market car be?

No idea. Do you have Subaru Justy in the US? That is the exact same car.

Have you checked if youtube has any videos of this? There surprising numbers of car related how to videos to be found.
