Bread won't stay "down" in toaster.

I have to hold the lever down or the bread will just pop right back up. Anyone know how to fix this?

Maybe crumbs are blocking the mechanism.  Give it a good cleaning.  Bang it around a little to dislodge more crumbs.

Many toasters don't stay down if the power is off.

The power is on. It's plugged into a GFCI outlet in the kitchen, and the little light is on to indicate it's working properly. The toaster works if I hold the lever down.
