Blu Tack!! (Bonus: audiophile thread sorta)
« on: February 22, 2018, 05:58:04 PM »
Just bought some hot schite little "audiophile" monitors and will mount them on stands (Pangeas) for a second system. The speakers in my main system (Vandersteen 2CEs) have their own proprietery stands, so I've never bought stands like the Pangeas--i.e., for small monitors. I was surprised that the method of attachement is actually Blu Tack and not some type of bolt (e.g., attaching a camera to a tripod). However, I guess it makes sense to isolate/damp the speaker itself from the stand. I am skeptical of pointy feet in audio, so I'm headed to Home Despot tomorrow to find some quarter-20 bolts with hardwood-friendly feet.

ANYWAY, do you use/like Blu Tack? How much of it will be required to mount a ~25 lb speaker to a stand? I am told that I should press down firmly to attach, and twist to remove (if and when necessary)?

Any tips for using this stuff? The package suggests all types of other uses--what do you use it for?

Thanks for replies.

Yip I've used blutac for speakers on stands. Works well.

I no longer have stand mounts. Built my own floor standers.

Thanks.

I used eight pieces approx 2x3 cm for each speaker. Laying the pieces out flat did not seem to do all that much in the way of adhesion (some pieces were not even in contact w/the bottom of the speaker after pressing down on all sides), so I rolled them up into balls. This made it easier to center the speaker on the stand, but they still don't seem all that sticky. I guess this is not supposed to bond them on there for all time, but just to prevent them from shifting position and/or falling off due to vibration or some other disturbance. If I inverted the stands, they would certainly fall off...?

Speakers sound great actually!

Are gooki and I the only audio enthusiasts here?

No, but I live in an apartment on a busy city street which is somewhat noisy almost 24-7, so I am strictly a headphone-and-live-music audiophile instead of a speakers-on-stands audiophile :-)  There's nothing sillier than listening to delicate chamber music on high-end speakers in a listening room you spent hours perfecting when there's a subway train rumbling past you every 5 minutes and dogs barking and buses pulling up outside and people shouting and... etc.
