Leaking sprinkler head
« on: September 23, 2018, 10:31:22 AM »
Hi,
i noticed a leaking sprinkler in my garden.

I have about zero knowledge on these things, but I really want to start fixing some things on my own so I am wondering if anyone here can help me.

When I open the water valve in my garden, even with the irrigation system turned off, I can see water leaking from a sprinkler. I decided to remove the soil around it and I noticed that the pvc hose seems ok, but the water flows directly from the sprinkler as you can see in the short video below.

Googling a bit I read it could be a faulty electrovalve, probably one of these models http://www.rainbird.com/professionals/products/valves-valve-boxes
I was thinking of following the hose reaching my sprinkler until I reach the valve. But then what should I do? Do you have some good resources to share?

Open the solenoid valve (turn them on) until you find which one is letting the water leak. It is not uncommon for a solenoid to fail or even some sand or small rocks to clog the solenoid from closing.

It could just be the water in the pipe draining out. Once the sprinkler valve is shut off there is still water in the line to the sprinkler head (whats in your picture). If the sprinkler and riser in your picture are at a low point in the line and below your sprinkler valve the rest of the water in the line will slowly bubble out of the sprinkler head after it is shut off. Since there is no more water pressure with the valve shut it can take a long time for the water to drain if there isn't much slope. How long after you run the sprinklers does it continue to leak?

Or the valve could have failed like PX4 mentioned.
