bathroom tile/grout method?
« on: April 04, 2017, 01:46:41 PM »
We have some cool, somewhat vintage tile in our guest bathroom. We like the tile, but the grout looks bad...any tips on replacing only the grout?

I am thinking a Dremel with a circular blade to grind the grout joints a little deeper, then just regrout like it was a new installation.

Any tips would be appreciated.

That is what I have done before.  Just make sure to get a grout the same color or tint it.
And be careful around the tiles.  Dremels can jump on you.   Maybe try it using a hand tool first ?
These are cheap at $4.99:

Is the grout just discolored or is it cracking / crumbling?

If it's just discolored, consider painting the grout instead of replacing. Way less effort and I have seen multiple reports that it holds up well in dry applications. Here's a link for someone that tried it - I follow their blog and they reported recently that it is still holding up well (floor application). http://www.younghouselove.com/2014/01/how-you-like-me-now-grout/

That looks amazing! Unfortunately, the color of my grout is fine, it's just crumbly. Thanks for the suggestion!

I've never removed more than a little bit of grout.  (I've removed the grout around a busted tile before removing the tile.)  But... this sounds incredibly tedious and time consuming.  I am sure it can be done, but ... it seems like it would take forever.  And I suspect you'll bugger up a handful of tiles in the process.  You'll probably want some number of replacement tiles before you start.

As awful as it sounds, I think I would bust out everything and start over.  I think it would be easier.

When you do it. Plastic off the area. The dust is insane. They make dremel bit for it. If the lines are straight an oscillating tool might be easier. Fyi grout eats through cheap bits.
