Has anyone here made a hammock or is it just better to buy a inexpensive one? I have been looking at tutorials to make one online and it looks like it could be a time suck and/or turn into a lot of money relatively quick. Wondering if anyone here has looked into it and what you decided. Any recommendations are welcome!

Oh man. That does sound like a project. I've never made my own hammock, but I am quite fond of them. I have an ENO SingleNest, which was an impulsive $64 buy at the Santa Fe REI, but has been one of my best outdoor purchases---I can use it for bike touring (no need for tent/thermarest/sleeping bag), and I can use it around my house to read/sleep in!

Thanks for the rec! I don't need a super light one as I think its going to stay up outside besides for being taken down in the winter. Not sure if that changes anything.

a canvas/tarp style one would be hella easy, just close the sides and fold a big loop on each end. you'd def want a sewing machine though. search outdoorsy camping diy gear forums for how-to
if you want to make one of those rope ones that's a different story

All you need is a length of material and a couple of zip ties and rigging. Go here:

That site has more hammock related posts and videos than any sane person ever thought could exist.
