anchoring for cattle fence trellis
« on: September 27, 2014, 01:30:32 PM »
Hi all. I've been envisioning a project for a little while on my place. We live in Tucson where its pretty damn hot a lot of the year and our bedroom is on the east facing wall. Its adobe which is great in a lot of regards but I think it actually tends to hold a lot of the heat through the night creating a radiant heat situation which basically makes our bedroom a furnace through out the night even when the rest of the house is nice and cool. I have a bunch of sheets of cattle fence and have the idea to create a curved trellis on the east side of the house covered with either shade cloth or climbing vines to block this wall from the direct sun. Bonus is that the electric meter and irrigation system are all on this wall and it would be nice to give them a little protection as well. There is a structure east of us that blocks the earlier direct sun, but we get the 10:30a.m. to 2p.m. hit right on the wall so I need to cover that range more than anything. Long story short, I'm pretty new to a lot of carpentry and construction stuff but loving it. What would be the easiest way to anchor the cattle fence to the ground as well as to the roof(which is flat adobe on top) or side of the wall? More confused with the later, I'm guessing using stakes in to the ground should do a pretty good job for that part. But open to suggestions Thanks ya'll

I wouldn't recommend anchoring to the adobe at all, it will invite cracks and water problems over time.  Instead, create a post and beam system to support the cattle fencing.  If you google trellis and pergola designs you'll get lot of examples.
