Basement remodeling "is it possible" question

When our house was built, rough plumbing for a half bath was included in the basement. We are contemplating putting in a rec room, which would have a greater number of uses if it included a full bath instead. Is it possible to use the existing rough plumbing and somehow put in a small shower stall too? We have head-room for the bath to be a step up, if we needed to run pipes under the floor to the drain - our main goal is NOT to jackhammer the slab. Would hire a pro if that helps meet both goals of 1) small shower stall and 2) no jackhammering.

Why the aversion to removing part of the slab? It's messy, yeah, but not hard to do.

What do you currently have rough plumbed? A 3" for a toilet and 1 1/2" or 2" for the sink?

It's my understanding that showers require a 2" sanitary pipe and a hard piped trap.

I would saw cut the concrete and jackhammer out the channel. Would probably be a few hours of work.

Thanks Papa Bear. We have a 3" and a 2". I'm reluctant to disturb the slab because 1) the closest wall of the bathroom will end up about 8' from our furnace and 2) I picture $$$ flying right out the window.

I wish it were that colorful. I was thinking more along the lines of 1) resale value (basement has three egress windows, with added finished square footage could add an additional bedroom to the house), 2) possible in-law suite, 3) possible rental (basement has its own entrance).

Are you paying for this work or will you DIY?  This is basically only labor work.

Are you worried about concrete dust in your furnace?   Keep it wet while working and vacuum after.  There's nothing structural that is being disturbed here.

As for paying for the work, I haven't paid anyone to do that, I DIY these things, but I know a few friends who pairs plumbers to do the work. I'll ask around.

So if it's money and dust issues, cut out that concrete.

I agree to do it right and rent a concrete saw. Yes, it's loud and messy since you hook up a hose to it while running, but it's not difficult or long work.

Couldn't you use a pump system to tap in above? Something like the Saniflo products. There are several out there which have complete systems for brown and grey water...

We had a full bath added to our walkout basement in our current house. Didnt take anytime at all and really added a lot to the functionality of the house. Cutting the slab is fairly simple but you may want to consider radon issues depending on where you live.  We are two for two in failed radon tests in NE Ohio.

Good point! but if they plan on doing the above picture putting in a radon system for 800$ they would have to do on inspection anyhow if they went to sell
