We bought a Mustache-mobile!
« on: February 26, 2013, 02:29:44 PM »
My husband's car (a 2005 VW Jetta) had about 115K miles on it, and was getting costly in repairs. After doing some research, we decided we needed to sell it STAT due to the potential of expensive repairs. So we were able to sell it last week and began looking for a car "for smart people!" using MMM's list as a starting point.

My husband was mostly leaning toward finding a Ford Focus wagon. They were very reasonably priced and abundant in our area. We started perusing the used car lots, but lo and behold we found a beautiful blue 2005 Scion xA for 6995! It was in wonderful condition outside (just one minor dent on the roof) and impeccable condition on the inside. We took it for a spin and love, love, loved it! Very spacious, and for a small car it actually feels like you're sitting up higher than a normal car. So we bought it!

We laughed at the fact that we had just purchased the same car as MMM, feeling very good about the decision. We are loving the car so far!

Just wanted to share. Anyone else have a good experience driving "cars for smart people"? Just wondering for when it's time to replace my Accord :-)

I should also add that this was paid for in cash. Took the $5250 we got for his jetta and another $1000 (talked him down to 6250) plus taxes

Congrats! I replaced my car with a 2005 xA last year and felt similarly badass.

Did you find a stick shift? The one thing I don't like about the manual trans version is it's really loud on the highway because of the downright stupid gearing: 3000 RPM at 60 MPH in 5th gear. Then again I can't afford to keep the engine running all the time, I mostly pulse & glide with it so it doesn't make much difference in normal use.

My husband would've preferred a manual (like his jetta) but this is an automatic. This actually makes me happy, because I can only drive an automatic! (Well, you wouldn't WANT me to drive a manual!)

One reason I keep telling him I'm going to steal the Scion, and we'll find him something with a stick shift :-)

My girlfriend has trouble with driving a manual and is a slow learner, so I understand. 99% of the time she's not even in the car so it doesn't matter much.

One easy modification is to tape over the upper grille to improve aerodynamics. Also tape over the fog light holes if you don't have them installed (or even better, if you want fog lights I have a set I'll sell!) You can also add sticky rubber sealing for house doors to the cracks around the hood.
