Get Rich By Moving to a Better Place
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:25:13 PM »
Gah!!!!!!!!!!!!  Friggin' humidex!!!!  Who else is sweltering in this stupid, way too humid yucky miserable southern Ontario grossness?  And it's just starting.

Getting Rich By Moving to a Better Place (http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/09/28/get-rich-with-moving-to-a-better-place/) is one of my favourite MMM posts.  If I didn't want to leave (ie break up with) my boyfriend and didn't care that my teenage son would hate moving away from his dad, I would so move to the east coast.  I love Prince Edward Island and spend summers there.  It never gets gross like this, there is no smog, I love the ocean, and housing is so much cheaper.  In fact, I would be FI right now if I moved there.

But I can't be selfish...yet.  Maybe in five years.  And by then I'd be FI even in this smoggy, humid, lethargy inspiring climate.

Anyone else feel like me?

Texas is pretty much the same, plus it also gets tornados.  There are TONS of people who love this climate... I've just resigned to never understanding their madness.

PEI sounds interesting - would like to hear more about it - i am in the USA but would it be feasible to live year round and what is the winter like?

One of the things I love about it is the slower pace of life compared to where I live now.  The people are also a lot friendlier.

Compared to Hamilton, it has slightly longer winters with quite a bit more snow, but the temperatures during the winter are similar to where I live.  I actually really like winter and snow, so I could deal with that.  What I hate most is the smog, heat, and humidity of summer.  PEI has none of that.  If I was FI, I would probably spend at least one month of winter elsewhere anyway.

It's beautiful there too.  Very green, mostly farmland, and tons of shoreline.

Their employment situation isn't great, but that wouldn't matter during FI.  I could sell my not so impressive house here and buy a nicer one for half the price there.

But alas, my boyfriend is quite a bit younger than I am and plans to work until a traditional retirement age and right now my son is still in high school and would miss his dad a lot.  So, I'd say the dream is five years away for me.

My issue is somewhat different, as it isn't about the climate as much but I totally get what you're saying. My husband and I live in high cost New England. The one and only reason we don't relocate is because we take care of my 91 year old grandmother (which I consider to be one of the greatest priviliges of my life). She was born in this town and has lived here her entire life. She has an active social life in the community and goes out almost every night to events and bingo and other things at the senior center. If we didnt live with her, she would need to go into assisted living instead of staying in the home she has been in for 88 of those years. But someday...someday we will move south. And I both look forward to it (because I don't like it here very much), and dread it (because it means she will be gone). So I just try to just enjoy each day as it comes.

Aw.  Thanks for sharing your story.  Sounds like you and your grandmother are very lucky to have each other.  :)

I already live in the best place, so I have no need or ability to move to a better one.
