US state taxs while living in Canada
« on: February 11, 2019, 12:27:16 PM »
Hi,
we live in OHIO, I know the first year we move to Ontario we will file part yr FED tax and part year OHIO state taxs, plus our Canadian tax forms.

The following year ( after being in Onatrio for a full year ) we still file FED taxs and Canadian taxs,

since we do not live in Ohio any more do we have to send a letter to OHIO tax dept, telling them we live in Ontario....are new Canadian address will be on the tax forms,
by that time our OHIO drivers license  would have been replaced with Ontario DL, also we will remove ourselves from the voter list.
we will sell our ohio before we relocate.so zero ties to ohio.
I am not sure how to handle state taxs, should I just call them and say we have moved , or does the accountant in Ontario need to write a letter ????
Any input would be appreciated...........thanks

nereo

You only file state taxes if you reside or have earned income in that state.  You do not need to 'notify' the state that you no longer reside there, nor file taxes once you move (in the same way where you would not file Ohio taxes if you moved to, say, Pennsylvania and had no income from Ohio).
When I was living in Canada I did not file any state taxes.

   Thank you,
I am over thinking things again, we will have zero earned income from ohio, once we relocate.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
