I probably have a ticket available, too*, meaning if you are a couple that wants to come, sounds like a pair of tickets is open.

*Mrs. ARS is thinking of not going, so I'd be going solo.

Aww.... I hope you all are having fun.

I'm confused.

Which forum is closing?
- the createaforum.com forum  OR
- the CMC 2017 forum located here on MMM

The createaforum one. We are consolidating assets.

Good idea. The other forum was barely viewed. I like having it all in one place.

I was one of those that barely viewed it.

The problem is that I still want to read everyone's CM*TO Introduction pages.

If everyone could save your Introduction text and copy them over to the new subforum, when it becomes available, that would be great.

I always enjoy reading them, prior to camp, in order to get to know fellow MMM's better.  thanks.

This is done.  :) The old forum censored some swear words, though, so you will have to insert those manually for full effect (I opted not to guess what each **** word might be.) 😆

Can I ask that folks check in at the 'new' secret forum hosted here by ARS, and let me know if things are working for you. I'll start a roll call thread, and you can just answer with "here" or similar.

So the org committee had a meeting last night. I tried really hard to get voted off the island, but in the end, PlainJane forced me to take the immunity Idol, and well, I guess I'll be eating bugs for another week. Wait, wrong camp.

OK, so stuff you NEED to know - We are going to have camp mustache and its going to be great. I also got home really late and was on a skanky train car that really wasn't dirty or anything, but felt very modern for 1970-something. We had a conductor with a sense of humour so that was nice. But folks, I'm not 19 anymore and waking up early after hanging out with the party crowd all night is hard. You should all pity me. Also AMAZING pizza.

Oh yeah camp:
 - 75 people or so.
 - Only 2 ppl per room this year (twice the cabins, twice the privacy, half the bathroom waits.)
 - Thursday night arrivals are a thing. So are Monday departures.
 - 3 Keynotes for the camp, and 3 breakouts per session = total of 12 speakers.
 - Many long social breaks.
 - Topic mix has everything from budgeting to careers to personal life mapping.
 - Volley-Hockey-Ball. Karaoke. Canoe Trip.
 - There will be food again. It will be food flavoured.
 - I have a bottle of Waterloo Dark set aside especially for camp. Stocking up.

So now that we have everything mapped out... um.... you know what I know.

We've got 4 mics at camp and over 1200w of power.

We could mic a baritone kazoo.

You think 1200w is enough to wake up @MonkeyJenga?

About how many watts are equal to a margarine tub and spatula?

Hello Canadians. Maybe one of you can help with my post CM*TO trip plans.

I want to take the train across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver, stopping off for about 5 days in the Banff/Lake Louise area. I already found out from VIA Rail that I can take one of these breaks in travel in the train ride across Canada.

Now, the panorama dome car is added on in Edmonton on the way to Vancouver. So this segment of the trip seems like the most scenic. Is the segment from Toronto to Edmonton as beautiful and scenic?

The reason I am asking is that in order to go to Banff I will have to exit the train in Edmonton (allowed), but then take about a 4-7 hour bus ride to get to Banff and the bus goes via Calgary.

My other option is to fly from Toronto to Calgary, visit Banff, then take the longer bus to Edmonton and hop on the train from Edmonton to Vancouver. This means that I won't do the true "train across Canada", just Edmonton to Vancouver.

It will be less time consuming (but I'm FIRE'd so who cares) and probably cheaper to fly from Toronto to Calgary then just do the short train ride to Vancouver later.

Will I be missing out on the experience?

I may be making this all more complicated because I also want to see Banff.

I need some sane Canadian advice.

Have you been to North Dakota?

The scenery from Winnipeg to Calgary is the same as North Dakota. Endless fields of grain, dead flat, with framsteads here and there.

If you truly want to see it, the train is about the best way.

I would fly.

This information helps a lot, Prosps!

I think then I will fly from Toronto to Calgary, get a window seat to see the endless fields of grain, then get to Banff. After that, I can go to Edmonton to do the really scenic part of the train ride from Edmonton to Vancouver.

Thanks!

No trouble. Northern Ontario could be beautiful that time of year depending on when the leafs change. If you arrive early, you should make a day trip to see the rocks and leafs about 2-3 hours north of Toronto (Cottage Country). Also, driving along the north shore of Lake Superior is breathtaking. It is about 8 hours north.

I've been told that this scenery is a lot like Maine/New Hampshire. I have not been to Maine or New Hampshire.

Cool! I will look into this train ride as it leaves out of the Banff area and no need to go to Edmonton.

Does anyone know how the Rocky Mountaineer compares with the VIA Rail train ride to Vancouver?

Three bunks are available!

A few campers are unable to attend this year, so we have three spots available if you would like to attend CM*TO but haven't snagged a spot yet.  If you're ready to confirm and make full payment please PM me and I will get you in touch with the campers who need to bow out.

Thanks everyone, three new campers have stepped forward.  :)

Another speaker announcement! This one is Canada focused, so USians are welcome, but should be prepared emotionally for the cost of cheese here.

Groceries stores: Selling the same thing for different prices every week.

This session will be a look at the different type of groceries in Canada, and the most cost effective options, and why two people can leave two different stores and one will have paid 4x the price the other one did. This will also take a look at different Apps and websites that can help optimize and take advantage of areas you weren’t looking at.

Canadian Ben eats human food every week, and still remains below an average of 100$ a month. He is also the reason stores put limits on the quantity you can buy.

I may be making this all more complicated because I also want to see Banff.

I need some sane Canadian advice.
@Daisy VIA Rail does go right through Jasper.  So I feel like you are kind of making this more complicated by adding in Banff (when Japser is already amazing).  If you really want to see Banff you should still get off the train in Jasper and take a bus on the Icefield Parkway to Banff.

Last summer our family vacation was taking VIA rail from somewhere on the prairies to Jasper.  Word of warning: VIA rail will be LATE.  They were 8 hours late picking us up, and 12 hours late arriving in Jasper.  So even if you THINK you are going to see the mountains in the day time, you might not.  On the way back VIA was also late, but probably only 2 hours late leaving and 5 hours late on arrival.

Thanks for the info.

After further thought, I am ditching the plans to take the train. I will already be spending a week in beautiful nature in Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper. No need to take the train just for a panoramic dome.

The Rocky Mountaineer train was ridiculously expensive. $1300 for 2 days. The VIA rail goes partly overnight, missing some sights.

So I will just go back to Calgary after the week is over and fly to my next destination.

Now I am doing more research on all of the fun things to do in the Banff and Jasper area. Seems like heaven!

Oooo...I LOVE LOVE LOVE the sound of this. And yes, price matching is the best :) Love that we don't have to half flyers around either and can just show the app!

Crossing my fingers that this wine conflict with any other breakout sessions I must attend. Although I know it will be a tough choice regardless
