New app for reducing food waste / getting cheap cooked food
« on: February 12, 2018, 03:44:59 PM »
Ok this isn't exactly the most mustachian thing in the world, given that we are all supposed to cook our meals from scratch ;) But it does help to reduce food waste, so you can claim you are helping the environment, which is very mustachian!

This app lets you buy food that's about to be chucked out at a big discount. There are food court type places but also groceries and bakeries. I haven't actually used it yet but I can let you know how it goes. They seem to have a lot of places in Sydney, a few elsewhere but nothing in Perth yet.

I just got all this stuff for $10! It's all organic veggies, plus bread and yoghurt. Nice.

Nice!

I'm going to check this out, though I'm guessing that there won't be much in Adelaide yet.

I went to download this but it says my device was not compatible. :(

On a related note, years ago I had a local Baker's Delight that was pretty cool, if I bought anything from them near closing time, they'd throw in a freebie or two for me. :)

The places currently listed in Adelaide are:
Lisa's Roll King, Glenelg (sushi) (6-7pm)
Donut King, Harbour Town (5.30-6pm)
Indian Palace Express, Edwardstown (9-10pm)
Cherry Blossum Sushi Bar, CBD (5-5.30pm)
Southgate Chicken & Seafood, Southgate Plaza (7-8pm)
Lettuce Inn Fresh Food (commendation for punny name) (4.30-5.30pm)
Momiji Sushi, Prospect (7-7.30pm)
Viet Cafe, Sefton Park (4-5pm)
Yiro Style, Prospect (Turkish pizza) (4.45-5.15pm)
Chicken Mania, Northgate (7-8pm)

I reckon if you went to these places in the special time window and say you want the app but can't download, you might get the discount? Some are saying out of stock so if you are keen on a certain place today, ask me first!

A lot of them will be on board with bringing your own container to save plastic waste too.

Ooh I don't live in Adelaide (currently in Perth, but moving to Melbourne very soon) but that list of places look delicious. And I like that you were able to get groceries too as per the photo you posted.

Oh no, Melbourne, not Adelaide! I hope someone in Adelaide can use that.

Melbourne includes for groceries:

About Life Healthy Supermarket, Port Melbourne, although I think it is their buffet. (7-8pm) The one in Sydney also has a groceries option.
The Food Repository, Fitzroy (5-6pm)

Plus a few other yummy options, similar numbers to Adelaide.

Awesome! Maybe I'll get my boyfriend to download the app. Though my current phone is struggling a bit these days and I will probably have to get a new one within a couple of months, and that one will probably be compatible with the app. Thanks for starting the thread and the helpful insights by the way! :)

Furthest south appears to be Glass Alley Coffee, Wollongong.

I got a new phone recently and downloaded the app! Doesn't look like there is a lot though, and whatever there is isn't close enough for me to bother. Might suggest to my boyfriend to download it though as he's currently working in the city and he might get some use out of it.

Bummer! My son's preschool has a free food drop off point for Woolies left-overs, I'll stick with that... I have done some dumpster-diving in my time :)
