Worth trying to switch from Time Warner to Frontier?
« on: December 12, 2015, 08:44:09 AM »
So I currently only have internet. Of course I keep getting the annual rate raise since they pretty much have a monopoly. The only other option I have is Frontier DSL. The price difference is minimal. Less than $10. And speeds would be slower with Frontier. And I see that Frontier just had to settle a class action suit due to their speeds not being what was advertised. And I have a friend who has Frontier since they are his only option and he hasn't had the best luck. Slow speeds and frequent loss of service. I need internet for my job as I have to handle on call issues. Plus I live quite a bit away from work. Before people say to move closer we are looking to do just that but cost wise it makes sense right now. And honestly even if I was close who wants to drive/bike/walk to work at 3am if they could fix things remotely from the comfort of their home (and not even have to get dressed), especially in the winter?

So is it even worth doing anything or do I just accept the local monopoly until such time as we can move?

We call time Warner every year and threaten to switch.  They give us the first year rate again.  We just have Internet.  $35 month 15 mb/s.

I tried that unsuccessfully last year. Must not have been convincing enough. Any tips?

What are your other alternatives? My concern is what I am hearing and reading about Frontier is they are so crappy that the only reason most people are with them is because they are their only option.

Danger:  My opinions are biased from having worked a while at a cable company AND by being an old fart that has seen the price per Mb drop continually and dramatically over time.

I have no direct experience with either TW or Frontier, but in my limited experience with cable internet over the past 15 years or so... I just have never found a service that competes on bandwidth for the money (unless it's the fiber companies that are starting to creep in.)

Cable TV is (IMO) super expensive and totally not worth it.  Cable internet: still the best deal *I* can get.  YMMV.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
