Wix vs. Wordpress vs. other
« on: May 25, 2020, 01:45:01 PM »
Here is my dilemma.  I work for a small nonprofit and we need to redesign our website.  We have been using siteground for hosting, which comes with Wordpress for free, for about 2 years now.  It comes out to around $14 per month for everything.  I have a little knowledge of HTML and am not afraid to get my hands a little dirty with code, but my skills are a few years old and do not want to do any heavy lifting when it comes to the design.  The website is really basic and needs no bells and whistles.  We are hiring someone to design it for us and they are suggesting Wix as platform and host, but are willing to do either.  I have some suspicions about Wix because a few years ago it was not great.  The designer is assuring me that this is no longer the case and that I should be excited about the ease of use and one stop price as opposed to possibly paying for several things on Wordpress.  I think that we can find enough free plugins from Wordpress to make the site functional and actually not pay for anything on Wordpress.

My questions are:

What are your thought about Wix vs. Wordpress vs Am I missing something better?
Am I digging in about Wix because of a previous bias and I should trust the designer?
Am I just being too Mustachian and thinking that we shouldn't be paying for a service like Wix because this is going to be a set and forget it website?

I would stick with Wordpress for a low needs small company. Transferring over will be a headache and a bigger headache down the line when you have to transfer from wix to something else.

Agree on the Wordpress recommendation especially since you will have someone set up the initial site. What I like about Wordpress is that there’s tons of plugins available so if you ever need to add any capabilities down the road, chances are there’s a plugin available to allow you to easily expand the site and add the capability. And it’s also nice to have the option to move to a different hoster if needed. We’ve moved our WP site 3 times in the last few years due to various issues & limitations we ran into and that would be challenging with Wix.

If you have some basic skills and just want a simple WordPress site, you might want to look into self hosting on a platform like Linode or DigitalOcean. Plans start at $5/month and both of those options have plenty of guides to get you started.

Here's a nice Wix vs WordPress blog post from FastComet: https://www.fastcomet.com/blog/wix-vs-wordpress-pros-and-cons

Thanks for the advice!  I wanted to make sure I was not make a serious mistake by continuing with WP.  It sounds like I am not.

Jenni and I host our blog on Wordpress, we've been happy with it, but I provide the technical parts (hosting, implementation). I've got a history of web development, though.

In general, I tend to recommend people who are in your situation to take a look at Squarespace if they're willing to spend just a tiny amount and want to avoid the nitty-gritty. Otherwise, Wordpress is a good solution.

I have been on Squarespace for a long time now - works well for my simple needs.

Thanks again for all of the advice.  Does anyone want to tell me how great Wix is?  Does anyone actually use it?

I tried Googling out of curiosity and conclude that sites answering this question have a lot of popups! :)

Least bad of the comparisons I found was:

https://www.wpbeginner.com/opinion/wix-vs-wordpress-which-one-is-better-pros-and-cons/

Generally, Wix had some convenience, WordPress was more widely used with more tools available, still a decent ratio of results to reward. Just reading, though, no expertise.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
