Which Replacement Appliances To Buy -- Small, Stainless??

hey hey hey!

When I bought my small place, there were four stainless steel appliances: large standard fridge, gas stove, over-range-microwave, and 18" Small Dishwasher.

My microwave went out and I never replaced it.  Paying to put a microwave above the stove seems silly.  I am just doing without one which is not that hard at all.  I use the stove and oven.

ANYWAYS, I am thinking the dishwasher or fridge will go out next or sooner rather than later.

My dilemia is that, in my mind, I'd want to replace them with:

White Smaller Fridge
White Dishwasher
White Gas Stove

But, you know, it would look 'cheap.'

So then I'm like, why not just get all same size and stainless steel.  If I sell some day, it would look 'not cheap' and thus not snag me on any potential buyers or asking price.

I could also go with black.

Stainless steel has a nice classic look, you can't go wrong with that.

I'm a big fan of the Sears Outlet for replacement appliances. The refurbished ones come with a one-year warranty with labor included - next week I'm getting the water lines replaced on the fridge I bought at Christmas when my old one died on Christmas Day with twenty people in my house.

In my case I needed a counter-depth fridge to get it in the house and getting it through Sears Outlet made it so that wasn't ridiculously expensive.

When I had to replace my stove, the model we purchased came in stainless steel for an extra $100. It's the same stove! White looks just fine. Also for the refrigerator you might want to test whether magnets stick to it before you buy a stainless one. The non-magnetic surface on the stainless refrigerator in the house we rented a few years ago annoyed me.

Do you have a gas or electric stove?  The reason I ask is that a microwave consumes less electricity than an electric stove (if I recall correctly).

I don't buy appliances for my own home to position for potential house buyers.  I buy appliances that suit my needs and my tastes.  I'm the one living with it.

We use Sears outlet and got a brand new in box dishwasher without scratches, etc because they wanted to be rid of them.  I would buy the stainless in case you decide to sell.

Stainless steel has a nice classic look, you can't go wrong with that.

Stainless steel is a contemporary look. It is very popular, but will look dated in the future. I like it, but it is just a current design trend. Definitely consider the time line for your sale before jumping into something that may look dated, later. White probably won't be trendy, but it avoids looking dated.

It's open for debate, but some designers are saying stainless is "over". Personally I think you should have whatever appliances work best for you, be they white, stainless, purple or wood fired.

And ditto to the poster upthread who suggested checking out Sears or any other 'dent and scratch' warehouse for best pricing. I did this when I had to replace a fridge for a rental and saved big. It had a pretty significant scratch, but was going to be hidden from the counter so it worked great - plus saved about half the normal retail price.

You may feel differently about this, but I find stainless to be a pain in the patootie to keep looking nice. Ever. freakin'. fingerprint. shows up in our stainless fridge and it makes me cuckoo. I'm really hoping plain black comes back into style next. Or pale blue and bright red, like in some repro fifties kitchens I've seen.

Don't buy today based on "if I sell someday......."

I like classic white but you need to buy what YOU like (and can afford).
