What would you call this thingy ma jig?
« on: January 29, 2015, 08:02:56 PM »
As I prepare to move, I have been searching the interwebz for a switch plate cover dealio that will make this look better.  When searching, what would you call the object that would cover this unsightly hole in the wall?  Accepting other suggestions here too.

Also while we're at it, what kind of doorknob would folks recommend for an HVAC closet door that is outside on my balcony?  Would a tenant want to be able to lock it?  I have a locked doorknob on it now but the key is long gone and I open it with a screwdriver.

Thanks!

A coax cable wall plate?

And I'd prefer a locking door knob with a key ;)

Go to your local Lowe's or Home Depot or etc.  There will be a section for Audio/Visual/Phone items...look there for what you need and if the current 'cover plate' doesn't cover the hole you need to look for an extra large/oversize (I've seen both terms used) cover.  Also, check in the electrical aisle and there will be a whole section of cover plates (a mind boggling array of sizes, colors, and configurations) I would check to see if you can get a double plate that would cover both types of outlets (the coax and the electrical) with a single plate which will make it look much neater.

As caliq said, you need a coaxial wall plate (such as http://www.homedepot.com/p/CE-TECH-Coaxial-Wall-Plate-White-VIDEO-CABLE-WALL-PLATE-WHITE-1-LN/203717887?N=5yc1vZc6qt).
If there is nothing in the wall to attach/screw the wall plate into, you'll also need a low voltage wall bracket (such as http://www.homedepot.com/p/Carlon-1-Gang-Non-Metallic-Low-Voltage-Old-Work-Bracket-SC100RR/100160916?N=5yc1vZbohnZ1z115w6).

What you're really looking for is a 2-gang wall plate that has coax on one side and power on the other. Finding that as a single piece might be too much to hope for. The closest things a Google search finds for me look like this:

That is a 2-gang wall plate with "Decora" (the rectangular hole) on one side and regular (non-"Decora") power on the other, plus a Decora coax + Ethernet insert.

You simply need the same thing, except with a coax-only insert:

You should be able to find both pieces at Home Depot or Lowes, I think.

(If you can't find a wall plate like that, you could just get a 2-gang Decora wall plate and replace the outlet with a Decora outlet, but that's a dollar or so more expensive and will no longer match the rest of your outlets.)
