What to get a minimalist mustachian for Christmas? ~$10-20
« on: October 29, 2016, 12:28:01 PM »
Let's share ideas!

I feel like gifting experiences is obvious but not always easy when distance separates the gift giver and the recipient.

So I'm thinking things like: fancy chocolate, cute USB, Starbucks GC.

Then I'm out of ideas. I like to get my in-laws small Xmas gifts even though they're Jewish. I love them! :) And I love to give gifts. But it needs to be small. And I'm mailing it.

Can't wait to hear ideas! Go team go!

My favorite gift from my MIL* was a bottle of nice chilean olive oil. Similar "fancy" kitchen consumables are nice for people who like food because they're not something they would buy themselves, but they aren't very expensive and will be consumed instead of turning into clutter. See also: local honey, interesting jam, an unusual type of salt, things like that.

*My MIL is possibly the worst gift-giver on the planet. Every other gift she has given me has been something along the lines of dollar store halloween novelty socks in a size I couldn't possibly wear. That is why I am positive that the bottle of olive oil was a regifting situation :)

I agree with this. Fancy consumables that will be enjoyed and would be a treat that they wouldn't buy for themselves. Just pick something you know they like (coffee, chocolate, etc.).

Fancy Turkish delight has been a great hit. Definitely consumables. This year I'm making bath products (shower steamers, bath bombs) because even my allergic-to-everything family and friends are OK with homemade items.

One nice high-quality soy or beeswax candle
Luxury spices like saffron or vanilla beans
Coffee beans from local micro roaster

Wool dryer balls, if they use a dryer. Saves them money and dryer sheets and people love to get them.

Glass bedside water carafe with topper that turns into a cup - Amazon or CB2 for under $15.

Extra bits and bobs for their hobbies - eg Superglue for model builders, sandpaper for woodworkers, - really nice $15 knife from Lee Valley for carvers, upgraded Agricola pieces if they play Agricola, expansion packs if they play card or board games

One accessory or home item in natural/real/nice-feeling fabrics - wool blend scarf or socks, leather fall/winter gloves, linen tea towel in a neutral shade.

It's a tough one, lifejoy.  I am a major minimalist and hate getting gifts.  I mean, really.  I would love to receive a lovely card that had a meaningful message, and a gift card is ok if someone truly knows that it's for a place we DO already go.  But we have received gift cards to the cineplex, even the bookstore that were thoughtful, but that we have never used.

Food items are wonderful, but obviously not shippable easily here.  And I hate getting foodstuffs that I wouldn't actually eat, because I'm picky and already buy all my favorite things.  The best gifts for us are for fabulous cheese or other artisan food shops that we don't treat ourselves to very often, or a gift certificate to a lovely local restaurant or liquor store.

My moral would be, if you know where they already like to shop or eat out, go with gift cards for there.  Pro tip for stupid expensive shipping in Canada: order online and have it sent directly to their address!

Otherwise, focus on a lovely card, a special photograph, a promise of a visit where you will treat them to tea, etc.

My .02.  I hate getting even well-meaning gifts!  *TRULY* the best gift for me is not to burden me with things I don't want to have to process and deal with, and don't want to feel guilty about getting rid of later.  Ok, rant over.  whew! :-)

Maybe a donation in their name to a charity that is meaningful to them?

Ok I'm going to stop individual quote responses because I'm on my phone and only know how to do them one by one and I don't want to clutter up this thread. But I am so utterly impressed by the amazing responses on this thread!!!! Wow!

You guys are making me so happy :)

I looooove gifting (it's my love language) but I don't want to break the bank and I have to admit, I prefer to give minimalist-type gifts because so many people in my life do not want more STUFF.

Beautiful ideas. Keep 'em coming!

I second the suggestions for small fancy consumables. Those are my favorite gifts to receive, and I often give them to other people as well. If you're handy in the kitchen you can make homemade stuff (I've given people peanut brittle and other brittles, chocolate truffles, filled/molded/dipped chocolates, cookies, etc.)  Worst comes to worst, a box of chocolates or some jam can be regifted really easily if it's not something they like, and a bottle of wine can be brought to holiday parties. Better that than something that they feel like they have to display next time you visit and therefore must hold onto forever even if they hate it...

I like to get my in-laws small Xmas gifts even though they're Jewish. I love them! :) And I love to give gifts.

Just as an aside, I'm Jewish and it means *so much* to me when my Christian friends/family actually remember that I celebrate Chanukah instead of Christmas. If gifts are your love language, maybe think about sending them gifts at Chanukah instead? I don't know your in-laws, or how they celebrate holidays, but if it were me it would feel extra thoughtful.

Small travel guides to places they might want to visit.

Books.

Potted herbs.

I wouldn't buy Christmas presents for Jewish people in case they are offended. You never know.

I like the consumables idea. Many of my friends enjoy homemade consumables. We make our own maple syrup, jellies, sausages and wines.  I LOVE my friends honey from his bees.  My wife received some homemade biscotti from a friend who used her family recipe(she wouldn't share the family secrets, only the treats).

As has been mentioned I think sending them Chanukah present is much more thoughtful than Christmas presents, unless the specifics of your situation suggest otherwise.  Same presents, roughly same time of year, but a slightly different "happy..." on the card, and wrapping paper without Santa or candy canes.

In addition to consumables and gift cards for places you *know* they go, I'd suggest thinking about what you know about the, rather than searching for generic gift ideas.  I don't drink coffee, so fancy coffee (or even gift cards to Starbucks, though they do have non-coffee options) is a miss for me.  I'm the opposite of creative in the kitchen, so even fancy jellies are a miss for me and are usually given away. And I don't like chocolate.  But those things are great gifts for other people.  However, tea (or better still, tea that takes milk well) is a wonderful gift, and an Amazon gift card (with a note about Kindle reading, to make it more personal and specific) is always appreciated and used.   But it takes someone who actually knows me to know those things, and suggestions from the internet would never lead someone to those details.   3/4 of the suggestions in this thread would be a miss (or a near-miss, "meh")for me, for example.  And the same is probably true for anyone.  So instead of starting with general gift ideas and then looking toward the ILs, start with the ILs, and use that to inspire you about gifts.

So think about them as people, and consider their hobbies and habits.  And ask your DH for help if you need it.

If you know a bit about the people you are giving gifts to, I think thoughtfulness and a hand-written note/beautiful packaging goes along way. Even better if there is a DIY element to it. Perhaps they have hobbies or interests or likes that you've noticed? People love it when you pick up on something personal to them. I think home-made generic gifts like food items can be nice, too, but it still feels a bit less personal if you give everyone the same thing.

Some of the best gifts I have received were a coffee cup that I had admired in a store, which my boyfriend packed up pretty and hid in our kitchen cabinets. He coaxed me through unrelated conversation to open the cabinets and find it. The surprise element and the fact that he remembered me mentioning it in passing, then took a 30 minute trip back to get the cup for me made it so very special. Another great gift I have received is a hand-made tea mix that my friend made for me. It works well if you know someone's ailments that they struggle with - say insomnia or stress, and you use ingredients specifically for that. Like others said above, this works well if you know what kind of food/drink the person really likes. If they never drink tea, it's a waste. One of the worst gifts I ever received from my sister was a cheese plate and knife. It almost made me cry, as I do not eat cheese, and I didn't feel seen - just like she had looked for the cheapest on-sale item somewhere. In that scenario, a cheap gift feels cheap.

As far as gifts I have given, I've had the same experience that recipients like them most when they are personal. People tend to appreciate them so much even when they aren't pricey. For Christmas this year, I found these cups for my sister for example that look like the reindeer ones that the characters in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation drink their eggnog out of. Could be super cheesy, but the fact that I know her family has a tradition of watching that movie every Christmas makes it a hilarious and well-received gift. I passed the idea by her as well before purchasing. That way she actually gets to find joy in the anticipation as well.

I see no shame in asking people what they want, either. The element of surprise is great, but getting a gift that is a bad fit is worse in my experience than skipping the surprise part. We're big on asking and giving what we ask for in my family, because then we know it's money well spent. Just did the same thing for my boyfriend's bday. Gave him a list of 5 activities to choose from, as I could only afford to gift 1 of them. He loved the list because it showed I had been listening to all the activities he had dreamed up over the last few months, and he also loved that he got to choose his very favorite amongst them.

I think experiences in general are great to give. Especially if they are experiences for you and the recipient together. It can be a winter walk and a chat with a home-brewed thermos drink. 1-1 time to steal away from a large family gathering, for example. Giving someone 100% of your attention and love for a while. This is even more true for mustachians, as well as for non-mustachians who are advanced in age and generally already have more trinkets and gadgets than they'll ever want. Don't clutter up someone's home with unwanted items when they are trying to de-clutter :).

+1 on the socks. Last Christmas I was given some very thick socks that go up past the knee. They are very warm for someone who keeps the thermostat low. And as the giver you don't have to worry about size.

Plants. It's nice to fill up a de-cluttered space with greenery :D

Peace lilies always look nice (toxic to curious hungry pets however). A small potted ficus tree works too.

...

I think it's fine to ask whether someone has something particular in mind, but one should make sure not to insist! My mother will usually call me multiple times from October to mid-December, insisting that I tell her precisely what it is I want. She does not take "nothing specific, really" as an answer. (It's true; whatever I want, I just buy it). I suppose she could pick up the tab for one of my regular purchases I was going to buy anyway, but at that point it just kind of turns into a weird proxy for a cash exchange, which IMO is not really the point of gift giving. She has occasionally done that, as well as just give me cash. And if I do have something specific in mind, she asks if I'll go buy it and she'll "reimburse" me. I really dislike this dance, and would much rather just not get a gift in the first place.

That is why the best gifts are the ones that the person would really enjoy, but is unlikely to treat themselves to or just buy on a regular basis. This is easier said than done, of course. But a good rule of thumb is to take an every day object that brings them joy and get them a nicer/more luxurious version. That's why candles, soap, small housewares, wine, and "foodie" stuff is so popular. It will be useful, but feels like an unexpected treat.

My DH has told me that the way his family celebrates Chanukah, is that the parents give gifts to the kids and it's not really an all-around gift giving holiday. So I give Chanukah cards and Christmas gifts. They've been so wonderfully welcoming and inclusive to me for all the Jewish holidays, that this one is my way of saying: "I love you too! Welcome to my holiday tradition!"

But I do appreciate you sharing your experience with me. I have to up my game on phoning on all the other holidays!

That makes sense. :-) There are so many 'mixed' families who do both holidays, or families who came over from Europe and started celebrating Christmas to try to blend in, or families who stuck to older (non-gift-giving) traditions - it's hard to know exactly what any given family will have as a tradition.

I'm a minimalist who generally dislikes gifts, and think consumables is definitely the way to go. Food, drink, and bath stuff are always wonderful. Sometimes my mom sends me socks or a new pair of work-appropriate shoes, which is great because i hate shoe shopping, but costs more than $10.

I like to send potted amaryllis or narcissus bulbs. There are many places online that will deliver these, or you could simply buy them at a local nursery, add a little peat moss and a pot and box them up yourselves.

These things are incredibly easy to grow, add a nice bit of greenery and color at a time of year that can be drab (If you give the bulbs as Christmas gifts they will bloom about February -- or you can buy them times to bloom sooner.) And once the flowers fade, the person can toss them with nothing left to clutter up their lives.

+1 to all the many suggestions for consumables (and yes, I regard socks as a consumable!). Appreciated in the moment as something fancy and special, but not a burden to be carried around forever.

However, I really like giving books as presents when I want to give something thoughtful. A paperback really isn't very expensive but you can put a lot of thought into choosing one that's just right for the recipient. My family and friends are all big readers, which means I know they like books generally but will probably also view the book as a consumable that they can read, enjoy and then donate without guilt if they don't want to read it again. And it can be so exciting to share a book you loved with someone you care about!

I love note cards, but not the random generic kind that you can buy in regular stores.  But when I find a really great set of notecards, I'm thrilled to write notes to friends and family members.  This isn't for everyone though.

Consumables.

Chocolate, bottle of wine, soap, lotion, any sort of food or drink.  One year I got an assortment of gourmet aiolis.

I'm still working on my minimalism and trying to get stuff out, not bring more stuff in.

I'm totally stealing a bunch of these ideas!

I would also consider myself a minimalist mustachian, so here are a few gifts I've really loved:
-Nice bottle of wine (may be too difficult to mail this)
-Bath things from Lush (too expensive to buy regularly but a lovely gift/treat. They can also ship gifts directly)
-Donation to my favorite charity in my name

I do pottery so I love making custom gifts that are also usable (mugs, bowls, etc.) Not exactly minimalist but I try to make things that they use/need anyways.

Nifty kitchen item they may not have- personally, receiving a garlic press last christmas was one of the best things that has ever happened to me

Not gonna lie, I love the little kitchen item gifts!  Over a few different years, I asked my mom for a spatula, a 2-cup measuring cup, and a pair of tongs, and I was so happy when I received them!  One year she also bought me a basic coffee maker because I had not been a coffee drinker, then she moved in with me for a year and needed a coffee maker for herself, during that year I started drinking coffee with her, and so when she moved out and took her coffee maker, she decided to replace it for me.  Super awesome surprise!

-->  The key was, these were items that I personally wanted and would use regularly.  Like some others have mentioned, I hate receiving *things* just for the sake of gift-giving.  I would honestly rather that my friends and family do not spend their money on me, and a meaningful card would be simply wonderful.  Like Villanelle said, the most important thing is to consider what the individual may like, not just something that a generic person might like.

Premium balsamic vinegar

I was going to suggest homemade Vanilla until I saw the part about shipping. (BTW-That shit has doubled in price lately. Learn to make your own - it's super easy.)
So my alternate suggestion is Forever Love Stamps or the Canadian equivalent. Easy to ship, and who doesn't want a little more "Love" in their life?

Due to the nature of DH's position, I have to give a lot of gifts, and some of them are gorup gifts, where I need to give every person the same thing, so my own advice about keeping the person in mind doesn't apply.

We live in a place where Starbuck's doesn't have the ubiquitous Pumpkin Spice Latte, and people freak out about this.  (Being neither Starbucks customer nor a coffee drinker, I don't care, but I'm amazed how often I hear people complain about this.)  I found a recipe for homemade pumpkin spice syrup, and I plan on making a huge batch.  I just need to find cheap little jars, and I'll tie some red ribbon around them, and if I want to get fancy, print up cards with ideas for use (over ice cream, on pancakes, in coffee drinks, added to oatmeal, mixed with spiced rum and vodka, etc.).

It's basically water, sugar (white, or white and brown if you prefer that flavor) brought to a boil, then simmer with pumpkin pie spice (or individual spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger), then add canned pumpkin added (after boiling stops), strain.  You can add vanilla if you like.

This is a great idea in general, Villanelle, but LJ clearly stated that there would be shipping involved.

This is true. But it does give me an idea for my local recipients! :)

Another idea: I'm giving my sister-in-law a cute usb. Small and functional!

I am hoping to make new mustachians!  I am planning to send a few younger cousins JL Collins' book.  I hope they read it!!

I read the first sentence and thought "a baby is a TERRIBLE gift!"  Then I realized you meant to convert new mustachians.  Carry on!

If you garden, something from your garden might be appreciated.  Jam or salsa is yummy, but heavy. Dried chilies or tomatoes or mushrooms are lightweight to ship.  So are veggie chips (salted dehydrated slices of zucchini, carrot, sweet potato, etc.).

Echoing the "consumables" suggestion. If you're far away enough to need to ship, what about something location-specific? For example, I'm in Quebec - maple syrup is a pain to ship,  it maple sugar and candy ship well.

This year, my go-to "small present for people I care about but can't spend much on" is buckwheat honey from the local honey producers - generally a big hit with city friends who like food, 7$ direct from the producers, and the equivalent is about 15-18 at gourmet stores in the city. Anything around you that is a small exclusive-ish producer of a cool thing? There you go. :)

Hario hand crank burr grinder (for coffee beans) and a french press = super foodie coffee experience.

Ha, I just did this EXACT combo as a wedding present. Alternate to the french press is a single cup metal pour over cone. We're loving ours.
