Title: What to do with HSA?
Post by: Murse on January 15, 2018, 09:52:29 AM
I married my wife in 2017. She is now on my health insurance. She had an hsa from her work and we received a statement saying she still has 750$ in the account. I don’t know what to do with it. Thanks in advance.

With that balance, you are in danger of the fees eating through any growth and even into the principal.

1. Check the fees and shop around for fees.

2. It may be easier, anyway, but use it for any medical expenses until it is used up.

Can we still use it for medical expenses if she is on my hmo plan?

I have a similar issue.

I married my wife six months ago and started a new job around the same time.

I have around $2,000 in an HSA that I had with my old employer, and now I am on health insurance through my wife's employer. Fees are going to (very) slowly chip away at my HSA, and I cannot transfer it to my wife's HSA.

So, same question as Murse: can I use my HSA to pay for our health costs until it is used up?

There are no plan restrictions on using the HSA, only on contributing. So, yes, you can use it for qualified expenses.
