What to do with a spare small room?
« on: January 28, 2016, 10:27:36 AM »
I live alone in a small house.
I'm de-cluttering and realize I can empty the small bedroom.
But what should I do with it?

Room mate and gym are out.

Build shelves to organize stuff to sell on-line?

What do you like to do?

I have a pain cave which is really a gym with my bike on a trainer, yoga mat, weights, etc. With a small TV and DVR.

Library?

Yoga/Zen room?

Guest bedroom?

Office?

Home theater room?

Rent it out as storage?

Year-round space to grow things? Hydroponics?

Unless you have a particular side hustle in mind, I wouldn't build a necessary create a side hustle just because you have a spare room.

I will mull it over further, though.

I would make it a library.  Actually, I'd probably take on a roommate, but if that was out -- definitely library.

Basically, I'm with honeybbq - make a room that allows you to pursue your passions whatever that might be.
Art Studio
Home Theater
Sewing Room
Library
Pantry
Boudoir - One of my friends turned a small room into essentially a giant walk in closet complete with vanity/mirror, and a chaise lounge.  I think it's bizarre, but she LOVES it.

Hell, I hear rich people have gift wrapping rooms.  So really whatever is going to make you smile.

We have an extra room and use it for office/den and sewing room. Plus store misc things. If you have a hobby of some kind, even reading, make it work for you. Otherwise, I suppose your suggestion would be good. We actually have a certain spot dedicated for things to sell on CL/garage sale.

In many jurisdictions owning hydroponic equipment will get you raided by the cops. Not worth it.

True. I almost made a joke about that, but passed. It was too easy.

These are terribly expensive and too much of an MLM for my taste, but I will admit these Tower Gardens from Juice Plus work (http://www.towergarden.com/content/towergarden/en-us/online-store/tower-garden-growing-system.html). Throw two of these in a small room, and you'll have all the greens you could ever eat.

If you don't want a permanent roommate what about AirBnB?

Actually, one reason room mate is out is because I'm quite particular about my kitchen and there's not much room for any flexibility.
I will look into an indoor herb and greens garden.  Surely I can make some sort of tower garden for less than 12 payments of $45.25
Do they make LED growing lamps yet?

I think you can specify on AirBnB whether or not guests get access to the kitchen, laundry, etc in case that is your only reservation about using the service.

Yeah, that was just a suggestion. The price listed is crazy high.
