Spent the day cooking to restock the freezer with food (chicken taco bowl, beef stew, chicken curry).  I also used half the meat the recipes call for in order to stretch the most expensive ingredient.

We also spent the day at home with quite a few walks with the dog.

We've grown a garden now for 2 years. Both years we grew Kale. I've used it in salads only, and never used up even a small portion of what we grew. So today I FINALLY took the plunge and made kale chips. I just seasoned with light Johnny's seasoning salt. They were awesome! and now I think I might make a bigger dent in our kale this year.

We also grow rhubarb, only because it came with our house we bought 13 years ago and it is tenacious stuff. I found a strawberry/rhubarb quinoa pudding recipe and actually used that rhubard. It tastes awesome! Can't wait to share with folks later today:)

It is my goal to use up what we grow this year. I WILL look up recipes and make sure to use up as much as possible. We are still learning how much of each item to plant. We plant from seed.

Had another "don't cave" moment tonight ... was hot and tired and so badly wanted to order pizza, but instead had hubby bbq some fat Italian sausages I had thawed in the fridge, boiled some baby potatoes, and made some cheese sauce to pour over some left over macaroni noodles.  It was a fine dinner, and we enjoyed eating outside in the shade.  Not the healthiest dinner ever, but then neither is take out pizza!

Basically the only reason I have Facebook anymore is to utilize the yard sale groups for my area.

This weekend I've managed to not spend a single penny. Saturday night we went out to a restaurant with my brother. We had a gift card from the points racked up on my credit card. Then today I made some extra cash by selling one of our two ACs and a coat rack. Tomorrow the second AC and another personal item will be sold. Really happy that I signed joined the sale group.

I cleaned out the trunk of my car of all the crap that has accumulated over the last year or so.  Books, blankets, umbrellas, shoes, etc.  It should save me a few pennies on gas mileage.

Made a nice stir fry with the veggies that needed to be used up in the fridge. Used some Hoisin sauce that needed to be rediscovered. Cooked some rice in the rice cooker. It was a nice dinner and saved me money because I didn't have to throw out rotten vegetables.

Took the bus instead of driving to a nearby park for field games with friends. I was dumbfounded by how EASY it was!! And the park, where I had never been, turned out to be really nice, so I will definitely be back there :)

Watched a YouTube video to learn how and then replaced the broken window regulator in my wife's car. Then face punched myself for paying for this simple procedure once before.

I'm still in the habit of opening the doors and windows on cool mornings, like today, to cool down the house now so that the air conditioning won't have to work as much later.

My prescription lenses needed changing. Rather than changing both frames and lens as I did in the past, I asked the lab to re-use my old frames. This morning I'm seeing much clearer and also saved some money!

Did this today too.  Opened up all the windows, turned on several fans before leaving for the stable at 5:30, then closed it all back up around 8 before leaving for work.  It isn't cooling off enough to open windows until early morning now, but a couple hours is better than nothing.

Packed my lunch, including some leftover pork that I honestly didn't like that much.  Hopefully the chimichurri sauce I poured over it will make it taste better.

Cup of tea at home instead of buying it at Starbucks (even though I wanted to).

Set a/c one degree higher than I usually do, and actually turned it off last night, as it cooled down outside quite a bit. Have never been conscious of a/c pre-MMM.

I can't eat wheat any more, which means no fruit crisps.  Can you share the recipe or the URL?  I love rhubarb, even though it is just the petiole of a leaf (sounds odd like that, eh? Like maple syrup is boiled tree sap).

What did I do today to save money?  Well, stayed home enjoying the cool house (cool and rainy outside) so no gas burned, tidied, did some spinning (future present for a friend), will have dinner out of the freezer and the garden.

We also grow rhubarb, only because it came with our house we bought 13 years ago and it is tenacious stuff. I found a strawberry/rhubarb quinoa pudding recipe and actually used that rhubard. It tastes awesome!

I sold my old PC/Home Theater audio system! I didn't get as much money from it as I would've liked, but I also decided to price it to sell, with a set it an forget it mentality. Considering i've had the system for almost 10 years now, the fact that I got any money at all from it was impressive enough. It still works beautifully, so it's not some antiquated piece of equipment.

It might not be a small thing, but to me it's a mental stick in the mud that signifies i'm finally at a point where I don't need a TV and the accessory arms race that comes with owning one. That's the small victory I think, the mental one over the physical, but hey some extra money never hurt anyone.

Met with a lawyer to get new deeds drawn up combining our two plots of land. Will be short-term cost for a long-term gain stating next year, when we get the conservation easement in place.

Another day of no AC!

Taped a cute note to the door reminding roomie to bring her lunch to work - which she did :)

Used clever coupon-ing to get hot sauce, mole base, AND my roomie's favorite corn muffins for a grand total of 47 cents :) Corn muffins may be frivolous, but they were a gift, and certainly not a pricey one ;p Yum! The hot sauce and mole should both last at LEAST 6 months, probably longer. Plus, they'll spice up the veggie soup we made from leftovers and super greens that were about to wilt - a big pot, much of which will be going in the freezer for emergency sick days!

Saved the cut-up veggie bits during soup-making, and stored them in a freezer bag instead of throwing them out. When we get enough, we'll make stock!

Oh - and I haven't driven my car in three days :D

Feeling very happy. But given the number of emoticons I just used, you can probably tell...

DW had her first potato harvest this year. We're expecting about the same volume for the rest of it, not bad for 3sqft of planting

Convinced DH not to purchase a new mower and fixed ours myself!

The mower is only about six months old, but he was so frustrated with how it's been stalling.  The carburetor just needed a good cleaning.

So jealous!

I packed my breakfast and my lunch.  I also packed a mason jar filled with iced tea brewed at home.

And I carpooled.

Thawed out left-over frozen bread I was thinking of tossing since they were on the edge of getting freezer burn. I cut them into pieces and made a load of croutons.

Gin 1984,

I found the recipe on sixfiguresunder.com which was linked over from rockstarfinance.com yesterday!

I really like her blog, by the way (six figures under) ... lots of great ideas and sound philosophy!

And a plug for rockstar finance too ... a great way to read a few great pf articles each day!

I am new to the forum: I love this thread and thought I'd chime in with my first post!

I volunteered for four hours today for a local organization. I didn't want to buy lunch out, so I brought a muffin (I usually make a batch for the week) and a thermos of tea with me so that I could have a late lunch when I got home.

On my way home, I did some grocery shopping in Chinatown and found yellow peppers for $0.59/lb, cherries for $1.59/lb, and avocados for 5 for $3! Very low prices for around here and I felt very savvy stocking up :).

There are these dress shirts that I like. They're good quality, look decent after many wearings and launderings, and fit me well. They retail for $49, which I would never pay. I recently paid off a bunch of debt and decided to finally buy myself some new clothes. I went to the store Website to see if they had some of the shirts on sale. They had a bunch at $19.99 each. They also had some offer where you could get free shipping with a $50+ purchase. I put 3 shirts in the shopping cart.

Then I got kind of queasy thinking about spending $60 on shirts. Especially since I didn't need three shirts, I needed two at best, and I was well aware I was buying that one extra shirt just to get the free shipping deal.

Then I went to eBay and found two of the same shirts in my size, new with tags, for $10 and $14 including shipping.

Took the bus, packed a lunch, made coffee at work.

REALLY wanted takeout for dinner but got a frozen pizza at the grocery store, plus a bunch of other staples, instead.
(I know not the healthiest but takeout isn't either, so this is minimizing the damage)

Decided not to go out to lunch.

Three of my coworkers went out for TexMex (yum) and I deliberately opted for the packed lunch.  Decided to start the month off right.

Had cereal and instant coffee in my rented apartment while on vacation. Breakfast around here runs at least 10$! We will walk half an hour to the interesting part of the city along a river and through several parks.

This thread is inspiring! I baked today, so we have breakfasts for next week's vacation. I used only ingredients we already had in the house. I also ate a salad made from our garden produce. Now I'm going to do some second harvest planting.

Making gumbo for dinner with random bits from the fridge that need to be used up plus okra, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, herbs and garlic from the garden.

Separated the big chunks of fat out of the bacon ends & pieces package and rendered them down to get a nice jar of cooking grease.  Bottled up my homebrew kombucha and will get a new batch started tonight.  Next task is to move the potato harvest down to the coolest spot in the crawl space for storage.

We are moving in 3 weeks but have access to our new home already.  Today we took over 2 car-loads of things like winter clothes and we are going to keep on moving as much as we can carry over to the new place to save on our moving day costs.  Hopefully, all the movers will have to carry will be furniture.

With my birthday money I splurged and bought a FitBit aka fancy pedometer. (Something I had been wanting for a few months now.) A few days later I realized that it was not a good use of my money, so I returned it.  Instead, I am using the free app on my iPhone to track my steps.  Really though, I just need to start moving more.  I don't need a fancy gadget to tell me that!  Next step, start riding my bike to work.

1.  Poured leftover coffee into ice cube trays.  When I accumulate enough I make frappuccinos by combining them with milk, sweetener, vanilla and xanthan gum in my blender.

2.  Mixed up enough bread dough for four loaves plus two pizza crusts.  Planning to put some of the past-sell-by-date pineapple that I found for 25 cents a can at the salvage store on the pizza, with green pepper and sweet onion.

3.  Currently waiting to turn the washer back on.  I have discovered that clothes get clean with a very short agitation cycle if you pause the washer to let them soak for a while in the middle

I love this thread.  I am using it as my daily reminder that little things count.

Today I have invited my spendy friend out for ice cream using a BOGO coupon.  She thinks some of the things I do a little peculiar but she finds coupons deliciously naughty.

Changed the oil in the 2005 Toyota Tacoma.  5 quarts of synthetic and Mobil 1 filter for $41.28 (nothing on sale and no coupons).  Took all of 15 minutes.  Now we're good for another 5000+ miles.

No longer going to purchase all-purpose cleaners! Mostly for the sake of the environment, but there are also financial benefits. Mixed together equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. This will be used to clean the surfaces in the kitchen as well as the floor. And for the floor, no more Swiffers. We are using old face cloths (lots of microfibers) -- which will be washed and reused.

Bought a flash drive for 5.99 using my Amazon Prime student account to save and back up my thesis. This will save me approximately $4 in gas to drive into town and I won't be tempted to buy other items at the store.

I tried to bargain with my doctor, to see if they would bulk-bill my appointment (even though I don't have healthcare card) since all I needed to do was get a new prescription. But apparently I'm too healthy - because I haven't been in often enough they couldn't guarantee anything. So I found a new bulk-billing doctor ("bulk-billing all the times") that just opened around the corner from my office!

So I paid nothing, thus saving $70 upfront and $35 in total, for the cost of a single Google search. And being given half a box of business cards to distribute, which I'm happy to do.

Have you considered using Dropbox? It is also a version control system. It will automatically back up whatever is in the folder as soon as a change is saved. If you want some extra space and haven't signed up yet, I can PM you a link that will give us both more space.

Dinner tonight will be bean and sausage soup given me by the neighbors.  They travel frequently and donate whatever they have in the fridge that won't keep to us.  I encourage this by delivering a few fresh rolls  to them whenever I bake bread.

Asked husband what he'd like to do for his birthday (this weekend) and what gift he'd like.

His answers:
-Go for a hike
-Investigate the building materials salvage store (not to buy anything, just to scope)
-Buy some craft beer (that's what he wants for his gift)
-Get take-out BBQ and eat it at home with aforementioned beer

I love this guy. I think this is going to cost like $30 in total.
