« on: April 03, 2017, 10:23:04 AM »
Hey guys I need advise,

I have a 5K extra cash and I want to put it in a Vanguard taxed account but I don't the required 10K for Admiral Shares. Where fund would you guys recommend I place it in until I make 10K?

The investor class version of whatever Admiral class shares you were going to buy...  I don't get the question.

Since its a taxable account I would put it in the Investor shares of the same fund you would want to purchase Admiral shares of.  For the Total Stock Market Index the Investor shares are VTSMX and Admiral shares are VTSAX.  They will convert to Admiral once you reach the $10,000 and will not trigger a taxable event like investing in an ETF would.  An ETF would also work if you were to keep them in the ETF and not move them to Admiral shares once reaching $10,000.

Let me rephrase it.

VFIAX requires 10K minimum, I only have 5K. What other fund would you guys recommend instead of VFIAX until I reach 10k?

Hopefully this is a better explanation?

VFINX is the Investor Class version of VFIAX.

VFINX is the investor class version of VFIAX.  $3K minimum.  If you go into the fund description on Vanguard.com for VFIAX, you'll see "Also available as Investor Shares mutual fund and an ETF." at the top with a link to VFIAX.

Yep, we started with VFINX, and when we hit the Magic Number, got a letter from Vanguard letting us know that they were moving us to VFIAX, no effort on our part needed. Easy peasy!
