If your in an all U.S.A. market and an all world ETF and total bond ETF then there really isn't much more you can do to be diversified.  Using more ETF's from different fund companies won't make you more diversified because they will be invested in the same things.

I don't use the three fund method.  I have Large cap, Mid cap, Small cap blend funds.  I have REITs, health care and utilites and some international too.

S&P 500, Total Market, Total Bond Market

My 401k: 90% S&P and 10% Total Bond Market.

Roth IRA: S&P 500 (I didn't know about Total Market at that time decided to just keep it)

Traditional IRA: Total Market

Brokerage: Total Market

I wouldn't over think this.

80% VTSAX, 20% VBTLX. So far so good.

Hi all!

I've been thinking about starting my investing journey, and became rather curious. What do your current assets look like/what will they ideally look like in the future?

For myself, I've been planning on using the Boglehead 3-fund approach. A bond ETF, a local ETF and a global ETF. Ive been planning to pump all my savings into investment after I've saved up a decent e-fund.

My dilemma is this: I can't stop the nagging worry that it's not diversified enough. Even though an ETF is technically already diversified, having only 3 instruments in which the bulk of my wealth is makes me a little anxious. And that got me to wondering: what other assets do you have? Is most of your networth in stocks/bonds? How much cash do you generally hold?

I know it differs from person to person, but I'm curious to see how your asset allocation differs in different situations ^^

Thanks in advance!

Does it help to realize that the US Total Market Fund (VTI) holds over 3600 different stocks?  And the the Total International Market Fund (VXUS) holds nearly 6300 different stocks?  The number of funds you own doesn't really say anything about your diversification.  You could own these two and be well diversified, or you could own 15 different ETFs and still lack proper diversification.
