Western Governors University
« on: August 09, 2019, 10:43:37 AM »
I am looking at going back to school to obtain a business management degree. I am considering this option because it is 100% online, and has the ability to accelerate the degree path. Do any of you have experience with this program? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

One of my good friends is using it to get his business degree. He's pretty impressed with how it works. The courses are one-after-another rather than 3-4 all at the same time. Sounds like he gets to go as fast as he want.

I am currently enrolled in the Cybersecurity and Information Assurance program, and I thoroughly recommend the School and with the proper motivation You could really save a ton of money through the acceleration system. I know the Business courses are pretty easy to get through.

Ask them about outcomes and look for referrals:
- Do they have graduates you can talk with?
- Can they tell you how many graduates are working in their respective fields within 2 years of graduation?
- Are there employers who see "western ......" on a resume and say "oh snap - hire that person right now"?

I have never talked to any HR professional that applied that logic on anything other than IVY League level schools. At most you might luck out and get someone with the same alma mater and they may give you a little extra preference based on that due to some subconscious in group out group psychology. My experience and insight from hr professionals is that they're just checking a degree box if you have one, The name next to it is superfluous.

I don't know much about them. If they're for profit, then run. There's been too many issues with the for profit school.

To my knowledge, re hiring/HR, your bigger concern should be if it's an automatic turn off (ie, for profit)

Wow, have to say I'm impressed that others have used this. I do like the 1 after another class schedule.

An accredited school you might want to look into is Upper Iowa University. Name sounds totally fake, I know, but they are actually the oldest non-religious college in Iowa, and they jumped to online schooling just a bit ahead of everyone, so have a user-friendly program, and classes can be completed over 5 eight week terms.

So, if you can handle a heavier load, you can do 45 credits a year.

I graduated with my undergrad and masters from WGU and am now a CFO roughly 8 years later. It was a great program for someone who is self motivated. If you like traditional school you will likely not enjoy this. If you prefer to be tested on your knowledge and can go at your own pace (mine was very quick) then you will love it.

WGU is a nonprofit. No personal experience but I know two people who have had good experiences there, one as a student and another as an employee.

This is exactly what I'm looking for. I did not do well in traditional school. I have matured a lot since attempting to go to school. I believe a competency based program will greatly accelerate the process for me.

I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I did the Accounting program.
