Want to do a kitchen remodel, help?
« on: September 14, 2014, 01:31:48 PM »
We have lived in our home for about 5 years and I am at a point where I want to do a kitchen remodel.  I want to add a dishwasher, which I know will take away counter space and cabinet space, both of which I already want more of.  I also want to paint, because the paint used by the previous owner is coming off when I wash the walls.  In addition, we have a fryer which splatters, I was trying to think of what to do with this, maybe tilling like around the stove?  Our kitchen is one long rectangle with an 5ft opening to our living room 3 ft from the wall.  The wall between the kitchen and living room, beside this opening is load bearing so I don't want to change that.  The other end of the long rectangle is the fridge, opening to the hall and exit.

Maybe post a kitchen layout? Is the fryer one of those enclosed fryers? Can you get one that doesn't splatter? It doesn't really matter what material you are a splattering on.

If I could figure out how to post a lay-out I would.

When you hit reply, below the text box it says Attachments and other options. You could probably post a jpeg if you want to draw something in Paint.

What about a countertop dishwasher?  we are in the process of building one of these into our very small kitchen.  For two of us, it should be plenty, and take up about half the space of a full size dishwasher.

I've been thinking about that, but they don't fit next to our sink, so it would need to be on a wheelable counter space, which together costs the same as a large portable dishwasher.  Then I was thinking, what I'd really like is not to have to move it around and what would it cost to add it in to the kitchen?  Would that be worth the cost difference?  I'd still need to buy something for more counter and cupboard space though...

We are building ours in to the top half of the base cupboard next to our sink.  This may void the warranty on the dishwasher, as countertop dishwashers are usually set up to drain into your sink and attach to your faucet, and we will be plumbing it in.  The advantage of this over a larger dishwasher is that the bottom half of that base cabinet will still be usable for cabinet space.  I don't know if the trade-offs would be worth it for your situation.  For ours, they definitely are.

It looks to me like you have blank wall space next to your fridge? I can't see if the cabinets just end or go all the way to the wall, but you could have cabinets come around the wall next to the fridge and on the wall with the fridge and put a lazy susan in the corner cabinet. that way you are adding some space if you lose some space to a dishwasher. You could also extend your kitchen in the other direction, or put an island where that baby chair is, for more undercounter space.

The main problem with this space is that you have a door and a five foot entrance to the sitting room.  It would potentially change the way you use the house quite a bit, but personally I'd block up the entrance to the living room and move the whole kitchen down to that end of the kitchen and put the table where the sink currently is.
