Walk-in safe
« on: January 19, 2023, 06:47:02 PM »
Does anyone here have a large size safe/vault in their home - large enough to walk in?  I guess you could store firearms and other largish items in there or large quantities of valuables (gold, cash, coins, jewels)?  Anything else?  Just wondering.

Thanks

I thought I came here with some weird questions...  I certainly don't have a walk in safe, but here's some example of people with end of the world prepper bunkers.

I have a friend with a solar installation business and he's told me of two different jobs he's done for very wealthy people.  They don't actually live nearby, but they think that when shit hits the fan, they'll come on over to their underground multimillion dollar shelters.  One of them has a permanent set of caretakers that maintain the small farm, can/preserve everything, then keep it stocked and rotate through.  That's kind of like a walk in safe, isn't it?

Are you asking because you’re interested in knowing who might have large quantities of gold, cash, coins & jewels on their property? ;)

Not sure if this post is satire but I'd suggest not owning anything requiring such a safe.

+1 - whenever we go on vacation, I always set timers, have neighbors check on the house, etc.  At the same time, we have virtually nothing worth stealing -- some 3 year old laptops and a couple 32 inch TVs?

I met a man on a cruise whose business was building and installing storm shelters. They also marketed them as safe rooms.  I guess with a proper exterior lock, they could be used as walk-in safes?

I know a lot of very wealthy people and have never known of anyone having a walk-in safe.

Perhaps they secretly have them? Maybe? I doubt it though, I've seen many of the safes they do have and the largest I've seen is like a small-medium size, like the size of a wine fridge, but taller. And that was in the house of an antiques dealer.

I don't own anything worth the expense of having a walk in safe.

My cousin is a custom home builder that specializes in building 3–5-million-dollar homes in a relatively MCOL area.  He builds walk in safes in about 80% of his homes and I tour them all the time.  He's got me sold on the idea that our next house will have one. 95% of the time the room is hidden and accessible through a secret switch.  Not only will it double as a safe, but you can you use it as a storm shelter and if you watch a lot of movies, it can even be used as a safe room for your family when a Russian gangster decides to break in. He told me his actual cost to build one is like 6-8k with most of the money being in the door.  When a great gun safe sells for about 4-6k these days I think it's a steal!

Secret Rooms are a cool feature.  I would want one, sounds like doing it while building the house is cheaper than after the fact.

It could be a cool DIY project for someone. Do you have any plans or tips you could share?

If I owned a walk-in safe, it would be the most valuable thing in the house.

Does that mean I would need to store it in a safe?

My aunt's home had a secret room, not a safe, but a room behind a built-in bookshelf. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I first saw it as a kid, but in the end, it was just a useless room with no windows.

We used to have a gun safe that was probably big enough for me to squeeze into, if i ducked a little, but I never tried.

Everyone here should be making their cash go out and be working making more money not sitting in the ground or mattress doing nothing.

Having a walk-in safe would be pretty cool just for the novelty of it. Maybe buy an old bank building to use as a house with one already inside.

I wouldn't have much use for it, though. I could see having a fire safe to house important papers or keepsakes that I wouldn't want to lose in a catastrophe. Something the size of a dorm fridge would be plenty.

In case it was missed I went with MrMoneyMOUStache, instead of Mustache, maybe it was too subtle, should I have gone with MrMoneyMolestache?  MrMoneySquirrelstache didnt have the right ring to it

'Moustache' is the correct spelling of the word!

I've appraised multiple commercial buildings that had old vaults (there used to be a lot more bank branches). In almost every case they just got turned into a generic storage room for office supplies or junk. Since there's typically no HVAC (and certainly no windows) they can't really be used for a normal office.

Not mine, but I have been in a walk-in safe. I think it was at least 80 square feet. Mostly for guns and ammo, but there was probably a safe inside the safe room for jewelry and cash. This was on a $4+ million 7000sf property.

Far more incredible was the guest house that was dedicated to the stereo system whose MSRP was more than I paid for my house! We were under strict orders to keep the volume under some level because of the risk of hearing damage. It was such a waste, but they have more wealth than they can spend.

Yep, the bank vault in my clinic was a storage room.

We nearly bought an old bank (complete with bank vault) but in the end it turned out to not meet earthquake standards and the cost to bring it up to code was more than the cool factor was worth to us.

(Of course this could all be decoy and misdirection)

The Ferrari is an uncommonly beautiful thing to cast ones eyes upon.  That's a reason.

I knew a guy that buried $30k in the yard when he was drunk and stoned. He spent an anxious week trying to find it.

I don't think I'd want a youtube video made of my awesome hidden room, but this company looks to be able to build some cool things: https://hhrsecrets.com/
There's a famous ex-NASA youtuber that has a bookcase in an office that leads into a secret warehouse.  It's cool, but the warehouse has garage doors that lead outside, so it's not that secret.

I have zero need for a walk-in safe, but it sounds like a pretty awesome DIY project. If someone does want to YouTube theirs, I will watch :-).

Somewhat related: I'm happy to hear Pete's next (?) post will be on DIY kitchens.

Yeah, but I'm casting my eyes on it right now without spending 200 million pennies.  :P

If you had 200 million pennies, you could probably use them to build a safe made of pennies to hold what’s left of your pennies
