Ventless Dryers ... Bosch, LG, or Miele?
« on: June 17, 2013, 02:34:11 PM »
Hi,

Our new place is a loft built without ductwork for dryer exhaust. Thus, we will need a ventless dryer.

Reviews for Bosch and LG are all over the replace in terms of reliability. Sears has the three or four most popular ones in stock ... Seems that one of the Bosch Axxis models is slightly better than most competitors, but to be honest: I'm used to seeing product reviews of items I need that are much higher by the time I've downselected this far.

An outlier is Miele. They make a few models, as well. But I haven't found a statistically relevant sample of reliability figures unless I've missed a large vendor.

Thoughts?

Update: I have found an LG ventless W/D combination unit that seems to have high reviews: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/LG+-+3.6+Cu.+Ft.+9-Cycle+Washer+and+6-Cycle+Dryer+Combo+-+White/9945183.p?id=1218199620891&skuId=9945183#tab=reviews

Thanks...Ivy

I would go for Miele. They are the most reknowned and prestigious brand in Germany because the reliability and endurance of these appliances is legendary. They truely last a lifetime. At first they will be more expensive, but Miele provides the most outstanding value for money.

The whole idea of ventless dryers is ridiculous. You are better off just hanging your clothes on racks inside the house if you can't hang them outside.  We had a high end LG combo model which did everything from steam washing to drying. It cleaned clothes fabulously and gently. Drying took 2-3 hours because it just heated your clothes and spun them. What came out was always a knotted wrinkled nightmare.

@Herr Wolfsheim: vielen dank. Miele was at the top of the list until I discovered how poor is their reliability.

@Snackdog: Interesting. These types of units are quite common in Europe, Japan, and in many loft conversions (not to mention the myriad walk up apartments in cities like NY, Philly, Boston, etc) where venting is disallowed by contract. It seems that the folks who report problems with knotting oft discover it is due to overloading - especially with the LG & Bosch Axxis units. We are not fans of line, or rack, hanging.

But regardless, we need something. Argh.

Not sure if it is a code violation and exactly how well they work, but could you use an indoor dryer vent kit?  I assume that part of the issue, especially in the Summer, is that it would make your living area quite warm.

That's strange. In Europe and Asia Miele is usually considered to be the benchmark with appliances lasting at least 20 years. There was an article recently in The Independent about Miele being the winner in 7 of 9 categories of house hold appliances:

@Christof - that's what we thought, too, but the long term trend is negative, much like some "other German brands" that still carry, falsely, a reputation for longevity and durability following a rapid introduction of electrical complexity. After extensive reading on some obscure sites I found many instances of folks in utter disbelief when, after 2-3 years, their $1600 dryers were failing because of problems ranging from faulty circuitry to failing seals. The washers were worse! (Apparently, the mostly mechanical Mieles of time past are as bulletproof as a 1980s S Klasse's drivetrain...)

@ZMonet - we have our post-inspection "measurements" walk through this afternoon so I will ask. I don't believe it's allowed, however. Thanks!

No go on the internal venting option.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
