Ultimate sign of mustachianism???

Can/should people build their own caskets?

This question came to mind this morning, after learning that my wife's uncle had passed away overnight. He was a super nice guy and we will all miss him, but after learning the news, I started thinking of how expensive it can be to buy a casket and I thought, why not build one?

I had read an MSN report regarding the insane markup on caskets and how the China-made ones are being brought in for a cheaper price, but the major retailers are trying to stop it from happening.

Now my thing is, I'm quite handy with toold and woodworking and I know I could be a solid casket, so why not? It may seem a bit strange but we are all going to need one(unless you get cremated which I think I may go with), but other than the "creepy" factor, whats there to stop someone?   Are there rules about such a thing?

Wow, our first mustachian vampire!  Seriously, why not?  My only concern would be that undertakers have succeeded in getting a law passed making it illegal.

Cremation. After all this talk about FIRE, cremation is the way to go.

+1 for cremation.

Why get a box when you could go box-less?

I read a book or essay a while back where two sons made their dad's simple wooden coffin.  Maybe it was in Matthew Crawford's "Shop Class as Soulcraft"?  Their simple woodworking project was not about mMM finances, but about MMM idea of 'insource all the things'.  Their dad had taught them the basics of woodworking and they had gotten good at it, so it was a sensible way to show their respect for their father's legacy by building one last practical piece for him.

Some states, maybe most, require a box for cremation. Thankfully, it can be a cardboard box.

(The funeral salespeople will really lay it on thick, too. "A cardboard box for your dearly departed? What kind of monster are you?!?")

For my casket, I'm tempted to tell my kids to spend $50 on plywood.  Six pieces, a bunch of glue/screws, and you're done.  It's not like I'd be complaining about the comfort level.
