Tracking credit card rewards in mint?
« on: February 22, 2014, 05:20:33 PM »
Hi folks --

Does anyone know how to use mint to track credit card rewards? DW and I have quite a bit of cash-equivalent rewards accumulating on various cards, but no easy way to track in one place. Mint has a way to designate what the reward categories are for a card, but I have no idea where it spits out the results of that information.

I've heard of AwardWallet, but it seems silly to me to create a whole new account for this purpose. We only use cashback cards. Airline miles and all that are too deep of a rabbit hole to go down, IMO.

I use YNAB now, but when I used Mint I was able to just select the category (pre-defined, or custom if you want) of the rewards when I redeemed them.

Are you looking for a way to track them as they add up, but before you redeem them?

How do you redeem them?  Usually I just use it as a credit against my balance, and then I tag that transaction (which sometimes shows up as a payment) as a "credit card reward," a category I created, IIRC.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

When I redeem my rewards, I always choose to have an account credit, which Mint records and I tag is as Income - Bonus.  If you are wanting Mint to keep track of them BEFORE you've redeemed them, that I do not know how to do.  Further, I would argue that until they are converted into actual money, they should not be part of net worth.

This is a tricky one. For me, Mint either considers it income or just deducts it from the balance, depending on the credit card. For redemption of gift cards, Mint doesn't know.
I like the Wallaby app to keep my rewards cards organized.

DW typically does the actual redeeming, but my issue is the one Eggman mentioned -- tracking them as they add up, but before they're redeemed.

Not a big deal, really, but mint claims that they can track this, and they have a place where you enter this kind of info. See this forum thread with a response from a mint employee:

I suppose I should be asking over there, if I really want to know.
