The Mobile Mustachian - Making Side Income while Traveling
« on: April 05, 2014, 07:46:22 AM »
Hello everyone,

While my wife and I recently found the MMM forums, we've been living the Mustachian Way since we got married about 2 years ago. I'm the primary income earner and my wife earns about $10,000 year working in a children's library which is a job she enjoys. I travel internationally about 3 months out of the year for work and I try to take her with me when her work schedule allows which usually only once or twice a year.

Recently, some of my work trips have been longer than normal and I've been thinking about ways that she can travel with me full time while she can still make part-time income. She feels the need to contribute to the relationship financially and also provides some support for her parents. I'm happy to support those goals as it gives her a sense of confidence. I'd appreciate your help on creative ideas for her to make about $10,000 per year while granting her a significant amount of flexibility to travel.

In terms of her skills/experience/personality, she has an associates degree in fashion merchandising and is very good at finding great deals on clothes and helping our male friends get good formal attire. She is not the entrepreneur type and is not a big risk taker - she definitely has a 9 to 5 work mentality. With regards to part-time work, she has some anxiety about doing something "non-traditional" like running her own business. She has been a librarian for 3 years and enjoys working with young children and getting them interested in reading. She is a Gemini in the truest sense - she has a very creative personality, is adaptable, and has many interests, but doesn't have a strong sense of focus.

Thank you for your feedback in advance!

You might pick up a copy of Ferriss's 4Hour Work Week for some ideas and ways to inexpensively test those ideas.  The book may not resonate with a non-entrepreneur and the target audience of the book seems to be 20-30 male (my wife didn't respond well to Ferriss' voice).  Still, there are a lot of applicable ideas.  You might also visit the web site "my wife quit her job" for additional ideas and resources.

I do Leapforce At Home (here is my blog post on advantages and disadvantages: http://frugalparagon.com/2014/02/05/why-the-frugal-paragon-loves-leapforce-at-home/).

Reasons why it might suit your wife:
Evaluation of Internet sources draws on librarian-esque skills
No risk taking or entrepreneurial spirit required
She is evidently content with a modest income
Can be done from any (private) place with wi-fi (work is considered confidential, so hotel room, yes, coffee shop, no)
