Tech Question: Shared Folder
« on: February 01, 2015, 06:08:53 PM »
Question for you computer savvy folks out there.

I'd like to create a shared folder with my wife.  The idea is that all of the files would be located on both her laptop and my laptop.  When one of us makes an update to one of those files, or adds/deletes a file in the folder, this update is pushed to the cloud and replicated in the other's folder.  I'm not looking for something that would support simultaneous collaboration.  Really, we just need to be able to reach our family documents from each of our computers and to do so from a synchronized folder.

Anything out there that supports this?

I like dropbox.com.  My husband and I share many files between us and it keeps everything up to date and easily accessible, even on our phones.  I believe they have a certain amount of storage for free.

dropbox for me, google drive and box.net also work
You could have a networked drive on home wireless if you don't want a 3rd party to hold the material

The above mentioned options would be your easiest solution, and would also allow access from phones/mobile devices.

You could establish a folder share on one of the computers and make it accessible over a network, but if you were not on the local network only the machine hosting the folder would have access.

I use a program called BTSync.  It's like the services mentioned above, but it's a bit more private--the folder is only stored on computers you set up for it, and there's no server on the internet with your data on it.  This has the upside of improved privacy, but at the cost of requiring both your and your wife's computers to be turned on in order to sync with each other (unless you're a geek like me and have a file server running 24/7).

You didn't say what OS you were using, but sharing stuff around the house is all pretty simple if you have Windows.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
