studded snow tire recommendations, small car
« on: November 19, 2018, 07:00:13 AM »
Hey all

We moved to a new location and need new snow tires - but because of where we live (up a hill on a narrow road baked by the sun) we're dealing with a lot more ice than where we lived before.  So we want studded snow tires this time around.

Looking for recommendations - CR doesn't review studded tires.  Car is a '06 Honda Civic (16")

thanks

I was happy with a set of Winterforces a decade ago. Good studded snow tires.

The studless ones are pretty good, but wear quickly and aren’t good past about 3 years even if rarely used. Studded ones should last a lot longer.

Get the narrowest tread width you can make work. Pizza cutters are better in the winter.

Lots of tests of studded tires on Norwegian websites:

(use a translation site)
https://www.bestitestguiden.com/tester-pa-beste/vinterdekk-bildekk-piggdekk.html
Test winner: Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8

Other high scoring tires named on the site as found in other tests:
Continental IceContact 2
Michelin X-Ice North 4
Nokian Hakkapeliitta 9

I highly recommend changing to a (fuel efficient) car with 4x4.

thanks, I'll look those up.  Also thanks to Syonyk's recommendation for Winterforces and narrow v. wide.

We actually have two cars, one that has AWD and our civic with FWD.  I have lots of experience driving in very snowy conditions - it's just these unavoidable patches of ice that we'll be dealing with almost daily.

TireRack has nice ratings charts, here are the ones for winter tires (though it looks like they don't list very many studdable tires):
