Source for Nuts - Must be Gluten Free
« on: March 13, 2014, 10:37:42 PM »
Does anyone have a suggestion for a source where we can buy nuts in bulk? The only kicker is the nuts can't have been processed in a facility that also processes wheat. We have a high alert celiac in the family. Costco processes their nuts in a shared facility, so that's out. We can buy a lot in bulk there but apparently not nuts. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I feel your pain, and I haven't found a good answer for this yet myself after years of looking. As it is, the only nuts I've found to be safe thus-far are Fisher Nuts (baking nuts only)... which means trips to Small Wart and their baking department every once in a while. I've also had to grow to appreciate salting on my own or just going unsalted, and paying a near premium for the things. Heck, it's only been the past couple months that I even found a safe peanut butter (unfortunately, it's sweetened - must be thankful for what I can get, however).

It's one of those things you wind up having to simply accept as a treat... it's like finding GF yellow mustard that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks IP. It's a challenge, man. I can make homemade nut butters, but I've got to find the nuts first. :-)

Wow, and I thought the prices per pound on the Fisher nuts was high.

Would rinsing/washing be enough to eliminate the gluten?

If my DW's company handled nut products, I would ask her, but they don't handle whole nuts.

Thanks @Zsmom for the referral. Will definitely use that resource.

The prices are pretty in line with what I have seen at Whole Foods, Sprouts and Tom Thumb around here, but if can't confirm whether they are GF or not. I've not heard of Fishers.
