Smartphone?
« on: July 30, 2018, 12:23:13 AM »
Hey all,
What smartphone do you use and how happy are you with it?

perfect for the ideals of capitalism, my smartphone (nexus 5X) refuses to boot 4 months after the warrenty period ended (and trust me, it’s not because of no battery ;) )

when I go to (online) stores, smartphones of the USD800+ category are slapped to my face. whoot consumerism :ugly:

Considering the following points, could you recommend me something specific?

  • max spendings $300, preferrably much lower (Nexus 5x was CHF 320 in 2016)
  • i was perfectly happy with my nexus 5x in terms of tech specs
  • no apple
  • low-user of smartphone since no mouse & harware-keyboard^^
  • ofc no abo with it

Thanks

Ecky

The original Pixel is $200 new now, and it's a pretty great phone. Still "flagship" fast, top notch camera. It's Fi compatible as well.

Well, I use Apple (older 5S bought used and on Ting).

Happy with it, a little slow now and needs to be charged every day (though lasts the day usually). I’ll likely replace with a used 6 or 7. It fails one of your criteria though.

I'm using a Note4 I picked up "refurb" off Woot(.com). Still going fine, 4-5years on-  could probably use a new battery soon.

Looks like they have a couple of non-Iphone phones including Pixel available at the moment.

FWIW: When the same sale came around again on the Note4 - I picked up another one as backup.

I bought a Nokia 6.1 a couple of months ago.  I can no longer use it as my daily phone.  The $270 price point and Android One enticed me but Nokia hasn't figured out how to deliver AO and its own software in a useable manner in this phone.  And their support will just drop the conversation and leave you stranded if you have an issue they can't resolve.  So, instead of giving you advice on a phone to buy, I'm advising you on a phone to avoid.

Motorola Moto E4 unlocked
$99 at Walmart

I bought one 10 months ago and it's still going strong. DW just picked one up.

You can add an SD card for more storage. You provide the SIM for whatever provider you choose .. nice if you travel internationally.

IMO, the Gorilla Glass screen is the best feature. Prior to the E4 we both had the Moto E, also with Gorilla Glass. DW and I didn't use screen protectors on either phone .. screens have never scratched or broken.

My nexus 5x died a little while ago too and I'm in a similar situation.  I'm using a family members old note - Verizon branded but works on tmobile mvno band 4.

Right now I am waiting for more phones that support band 71 but hoping for something like a Moto g6 plus which is not currently slated for US release.

As an aside, I revived my 5x by taking it apart and putting the mobo in the oven for 8 min at 390F.  Booted right up and been working for 2 weeks now. Not sure if I'll switch back or not. May hang onto it for an upcoming international travel as the radio compatibility is awesome.

+1 My husband and I got Moto E4s a month ago. We’re average users in that we use our phones a lot but for pretty basic things: mostly internet browsing, streaming music, gps, text, email, messenger, and the occasional Uber when traveling. It felt like a huge upgrade from our old windows phones that I loved until they stopped supporting it and all the apps either stopped working or slowed down like a turtle. The E4 seems very fast and is perfect for our uses. My only regret is that I now realize I over paid for them. $120 on Amazon and $130 at Best Buy (Amazon only lets you buy one).

My wife just switched from an iPhone to a Motorola G6 and she likes it so far.
She NEEDED it immediately so we paid $180 for it at AT&T. I'm sure you can get it cheaper.

I'll probably be switching from an iPhone to the G6 in a few months as well, if she continues to like it.  I can do the trade in program in 2 months which is much cheaper than finishing paying off the iPhone.

We've had iPhones since 2010 so this is a big step for us. I was set to switch last year before I chickened out. I hate change, but I finally hate spending >$700 on a phone more.

Xiaomi Mi A1. Stock Android, good mid-range specs, good camera, well supported (os updates). $180. I'd buy it again.

The Mi A2 just got released is your looking for better specs at a slightly higher price.
