Side job for biglaw attorney?
« on: March 15, 2018, 06:06:25 PM »
I’m wondering if there are any biglaw mustachians out there who’ve taken on some form of part-time remote job (e.g., editing) while working in biglaw; and, if so, if you have any recommendations.  I’ve always enjoyed editing, but there are so many job postings online that I don’t even know where to begin/know which ones are legit.  Please note that I’m not looking for anything legal-related due to potential conflict of interest issues.

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

How long have you been practicing?  If you are a big law attorney, rather than working a side hustle, I would focus on maximizing your annual bonus.  That will be the most efficient use of your time.  Most side hustles are going to pay a pittance in comparison -- and you're S-H income will still get taxed at the same high rate, which doesn't make it worth your time.

Now, if you're looking for a hobby, and the end goal is not to make more money, that's a different story.

I have a hard time seeing how a lawyer could earn more on any side gig other than more lawyering. Are you allowed to moonlight by taking on your own clients outside of work? Or, as BuildingmyFIRE said, focus on increasing income at your primary job. I think the whole "side gig mania" thing is misplaced when it comes to highly trained and highly compensated professionals. Why do more work in something comparatively low skill when you can just work more at your main job or do some outside freelance work in your area of expertise for much better compensation.

+1 to the above advice. More lawyering and cutting expenses will give you FU money to move to a less stressful/more freedom lawyer job. That will give you time to pick up hobbies/start businesses that you are passionate about.

There is no way you will have time for any type of a side gig while being a junior associate at a biglaw firm.  Focus on hours to make sure you get your bonus every year.  You'll be lucky if you get enough sleep, let alone time for a part time job.

Law school legal writing instructor might be fun. But I agree with others who've said just bill more time.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
