Pay for news?
« on: August 24, 2017, 12:13:21 PM »
Do you guys subscribe to online or paper newspapers? The thrifty part in me says this is wasted expense, as news can be found free online, and there are various ways to get around paywalls. The idealist in me says I should be willing to pay for something I see as valuable. If I value quality news, I should be willing to do my part to make sure news outlets can afford to be properly staffed.
Thoughts?

I recently subscribed to the WaPo online edition via my Prime membership. Since I live in the "DMV" now (no, not the one where you get your driver's license), it functions as both a national and local-ish news source for me. And since I'm already paying for Prime, it's cheap enough to swallow (technically I haven't even started paying yet, due to the generous trial period when signing up through Amazon).

One of my neighbors is an older fellow who still gets the paper edition delivered. I thought it was quaint at first, but then I started noticing how much more up to date he seemed to be on certain topics and events. Plus it gives me something other than clickbait articles to read while I sip my coffee in the morning --and it pre-loads content, so I can often read at least some articles while I'm offline.

I stay away from news.  It is all negative and puts me in a bad mood.  There is very little I can do to affect any of it anyway.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
