Sharing Netflix Premium Plan
« on: November 17, 2020, 09:45:29 AM »
Is it possible to buy one of the Netflix premium plans and share it with another household?  I can see it works on up to 4 devices at a time.  If it's possible I'd like to split the cost with my parents this winter who already have a plan and live in their own place.

Definitely can be done.  Netflix doesn't care.  It's against their terms of service but they don't do anything to stop it.  Our TV is attached to my roommate's parents' account.

Been doing it for years with another household of close friends.  Between our households, we have 4 adults, and 4 kids and it's never been an issue

Yes, it's simple to do.  Whether it is ethical is up to you.

I don't know if it's against the rules or not, but we subscribe to the 2 screens version so my sister in another state can use it. Hasn't been a problem. Make sure you parents understand the rules so they don't have more screens going (even paused on another device) than you want them to use or your won't be able to watch.

We've never had any problems. If Netflix ever objected, my defense is that we have a household with two houses, which we do.

However, I've had Netflix since before there was streaming, so I've probably got some crazy grandfathered plan.

My sister gave me the log in for Amazon prime, Hulu, and Netflix. I gave her Disney+. As far as I know, they all limit the number of devices you can be streaming from at one time. I don't really watch anything other than Disney+ (Star Wars), but they're on my roku. I know they work(ed) because I did test them after I added them.

Yep, my parents have been using my Netflix login for a while. They probably get more revenue from us this way. My parents probably wouldn't buy a subscription on their own, and for us we're more hesitant to put the account on hold when, for example, we get on Amazon Prime for a month and won't be watching Netflix during that time.

I share my accounts with my former roommate. We share all our accounts; not just netflix. Usually we have 3-4 at a time and rotate/coordinate who's getting what. Another hack that works with a lot of the other networks is when you cancel you can get another free trial after awhile so we'll also rotate those. CBS does this a lot.

Let's clarify.  It is not ethical.  Whether you CARE is up to you.

So to add my input here.

Doing this is against the terms of service for all streaming plans, but none enforce it regularly because they realize the positives outweigh the negatives.  The pricing is likely based on supporting the number of streams you pay for and less on if that stream is used in 20 locations around the world because it is still only available for use once at any given time, so it is self-regulating that way.

About 2-3 years ago there was a lot of discussion around cord cutting communities that services would begin to enforce this but they do not seem to have done so, but that does not mean that cannot change tomorrow, so if you choose to operate this way just be aware they are able to take action if the choose based on their agreements.
