Sell or ship car
« on: May 13, 2015, 11:31:13 AM »
To ship our car it's $1k cross country.  Car worth $6k 2006 hyundai sonata.  Should we just sell and buy another $6k car when we move?  We bought it used for $10k 3 years ago.  We aren't adverse to keeping it.  My DH wants to sell and buy something else.  I think keep and ship.  Which one makes more financial sense?

Search Craigslist, Carmax, etc. - in your current location to confirm what you could get for your car and in your new location to see what you can buy for $6-7K.  Don't forget to take transaction costs into account (sales tax). Make a decision based on this.

Also, is the car in sound mechanical shape? If you know it's a good car in good shape, that may be worth $1000 to you. I mean, $1000 is one or two car repairs.

Why can't you drive it? That could be a fun trip.

When my wife and I moved across country we sold my car and drove hers. This was before our discovery of MMM so when we arrived in our new place I promptly plunked down the proceeds as a down payment on a brand new car (since paid off).

I think if you don't mind the car and think it could survive the trip then it makes sense to drive it. I don't think I would ship a car that's only worth $6k, though, just because the transaction costs to sell it and buy a new one in your new location are surely less than $1k.

I chose to pack up my car and drive cross country.   In addition to gas & where and tear there's also hotel costs.  But I'm guessing you would save on some flight(s) by doing this.

We are already driving cross country for a vacation road tripping.  But it doesn't make sense to drive a penske truck for some reason the rental rate is really high where i live to rent one way to where we are going.  If it were the other way it's about 60% LESS.

So we are shipping some stuff and driving out there in our subaru outback 2010.  Now the question is to ship or drive or hire someone to drive our other car?

You're shipping your stuff. Driving 1 car, trying to figure out what the do with the 2nd car. And you have at least 2 people able to drive.

Two options:
1. Sell the car, maybe buy a new-to-you car in the new location.
2. Drive both cars yourselves. Don't need 2 people to drive 1 car after all. Bonus points if you car camp to save on hotels.

Are you moving somewhere that cars tend to rust fast? (and is your Hyundai not rusty) - -  or vice versa, moving from rusty place to dry desert?

Could be a factor in sell vs drive it.

We are moving from a rusty place, but our car isn't rusty, and to a place that isn't rusty.

What about selling our Sonata and buying a used minivan and then turning around and selling it after we move?
