Self-Employed Non-Business Group Health Insurance Options?
« on: August 12, 2016, 12:23:32 PM »
Fellow Mustachians,

I am in the first week of being self-employed and am shopping around for health insurance. I live in New York state. I've shopped around on the NYS Health Exchange, spoken to a local benefits provider, and called two insurers. So far, I have determined that I am not eligible for small business health coverage because I am the only employee so only individual plans can be purchased.

I'm looking for a family plan for a healthy family of 3 with minimal coverage. I heard somewhere that non-employer, group health insurance is purchaseable but not in all areas. My google search and forum search hasn't yielded anything yet.

What other health insurance options are there?

Thanks,
AK

Following up.... Did find that the freelancers Union has an insurance company but their prices were even more expensive than those found on the health exchange.

Ended up getting a subscriber and spouse plan for my wife and I and a separate "child health plus" policy for our child that has no deductible and no co-pays for 213 per month but does require paying for prescriptions up to $2,500 max per year out of pocket. Since our child will likely use more health coverage than us and it covers the child until age 19, this was an easy choice.
