Fitness tracker - no smartphone?
« on: December 13, 2016, 04:05:31 PM »
Are there any fitness trackers that don't require a smartphone or a lot of fiddling?  My 80 year old mother just wants something to track steps/activity, and maybe heart rate?  I'm really not sure why she does, except that "everyone" who volunteers where she does seems to wear one (and they're all, as she says, gray hairs).

Ahh, Christmas...

My fitness tracker is a 79 cent composition book with a 15 cent pen rubber banded around it. That is the mustachian solution. It requires no smart phone nor any fiddling. However, I do not think this is what your mother is talking about!

The fitbit products can "sync" with a desktop computer, but maybe she doesn't have one of those either... I'm not sure the sync is even required though?

There are old fashioned pedometers that when attached to a belt measure the number of steps a person takes.  It might take some fiddling and doesn't measure heart rate.  Searches on amazon / ebay should produce some results.

She does have a desktop, and yes, she used to have a pedometer.  I'm not sure why this sudden obsession with a fitbit (or as she called it, a bitchwitch).  Maybe it's just Christmas talking.

I think she wants something on her wrist that will show how many steps she's taken.

I looked into this last year, and it seemed like fitbit was my only option.  I think there are more now, depending on how fancy you want to get.  Garmin, Nike, and Suunto are all brands you may want to check out.

Consider the LifeTrak Core 210 if her heart is really set on getting an electronic health monitor watch thingy. No smartphone or computer needed (no computer connection at all - completely offline and private), seven day rolling memory, battery life is one year, user replaceable battery, pedometer, heartrate monitor, sleep monitor, watch function, and $44 on Amazon.

Gives her what she wants without the inconvenience of constantly recharging it and/or syncing it with a computer just to read stats and have corporations datamining and selling her health statistics.

A bit on the ugly/clunky side, but a good price, and not having to sync to a computer is a great help!

My Fitbit is a model that displays all the info on the screen so there is really no need to sync it. But it does come with a desktop toggle so you don't need a phone. I have the charge.

I don't have a smart phone and I have a Garmin VivoFit.

It measures steps, miles, calories (pretty inaccurately unless you get the kind with the heart monitor) as well as giving you a goal which it bases on the step numbers you have taken.  (This can get annoying if you are goal driven because as soon as you hit the goal, they increase it so eventually you could be walking all day, every day.  I had to learn to set my own goal and ignore theirs.)

It will also show you colored bars when you sit for more than an hour and you have to walk to make those bars go away (the longer you sit the longer you have to walk to reset it).  It's not a horrible amount of time but enough to stretch your back/muscles out, which is nice.

You sync it with a computer if you want to track progress over days but you can view your progress every day by clicking a button.  If you sync it, you can see charts online that show various things like your step activity, progress over time and when you hit the goal that was set for you.  If you wear it while you were sleeping and set it to sleep mode, it will also track your movement and how often you get up, which can be helpful or fun to review.

The version I have does not have a heart monitor but the upgraded one does.

I am overall really happy with it.
