Scheduling vacation while interviewing for new position
« on: February 15, 2017, 09:10:56 AM »
I interviewed yesterday for an internal position, and had tentatively planned on going on vacation the last week of March. My current boss is cool with it, but I have no idea how it may impact the position I have interviewed for (depending on if they offer it to me, of course). I'm nervous about booking a hotel with the unknown, but we missed out on taking this vacation over Christmas break due to other circumstances, so I feel like I don't want more "what ifs" to keep us home again over Spring break. I have not yet officially submitted for the leave time, nor have I booked the hotel (no flights needed).

Why the anxiety over this?

Request the time off from your current boss.  Make plans and have a vacation in 6 weeks.  If an offer for the new job comes, just inform them of your vacation.

Twice now I have started new jobs with vacations planned a few weeks into the new position. I didn't mention it during the interview, however I did once the offer came in and I was accepting it. For me, they were both unpaid vacations, seeing as I just started these new jobs, but that was understood and accepted on my part. Don't stress about it - go take your vacation and have fun!

Thanks! I just received the offer, so now crunching some numbers since the pay is less than I was hoping for. I think I'll go ahead and book the vacation and it will just have to play out.

I had a vacation booked when I was interviewing for a new job (not an internal position, it involved me moving to a new company). I just let them know the vacation was booked, but I can't remember if I told them before or after I got the offer (I think it was after).

For certain roles/industries, I think if they want you, a vacation will not deter them from hiring you.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
