Rollover question
« on: August 15, 2014, 11:35:59 AM »
My wife has an old Fidelity 401 account that I'm now interested in rolling over. The original idea was to just roll it into a Vanguard VTSAX account, where she currently has an account.

When I logged into her Fidelity page (which we hardly ever do because we watch it in Mint), I discovered that a 401a, 403b and 457b were available to her from her existing employer. In addition to many Fidelity options, the 457b plan offers several Vanguard options (VIMAX, VSMAX, VMISX, VSISX, VTSGX & VTWSX). My wife has a pension from her current employer in addition to these investment options. There is no company match for the 4xx's plans.

This threw me for a bit of a loop. I don't really understand why there are Vanguard funds available within the Fidelity site. I've done limited research on 457b's, but it seems unlikely that I would be able to roll over the 401 into the 457b and be able to touch that money without penalty at a future date...will have to check.

Not sure where to go from here. What would you guys recommend doing or looking into further? Thanks

Investment options within a plan depend on the employer's choice, not necessarily the administrator of the plan.  My 401k is administered by Fidelity but I have NO Fidelity funds available in that plan.  In fact, I have several Vanguard funds available in addition to other investment options.  So it's not that unusual.
