Renter's insurance for traveling nomad
« on: November 24, 2020, 09:57:18 AM »
Some cursory google searching did not yield an answer to my question, so I'm curious to hear what others here have done or recommend doing in my situation for insurance. I am moving out of my apartment at the end of November, moving in with my boyfriend for two weeks, and then he & I are putting our stuff into storage, and moving into an AirBnB for the winter. We have our first place booked from Dec 15th through the end of February, and will likely get another AirBnB in March (this is all within the US, and we are driving between locations).

I've sold pretty much all my belongings - I've got maybe 10 boxes of household and personal items that I will put into my boyfriend's storage pod, and will have my laptop and some other small electronics with me in the AirBnB.

My question is, is there any reason not to just cancel my renter's insurance at the end of this month when I move out of my apartment? Should I keep it while I'm in the AirBnB? Is a different type of insurance, like travel insurance, more appropriate?

I'd be interested in this too. I mostly have renters insurance for the liability protection and because my umbrella policy requires it. I suspect we'll have a hard time finding something that will work when we go nomad as things like insurance don't seem to work too well with non-traditional lifestyles. as far as foreign nomading (which we plan to do), I'm not even sure if US based renters/umbrella insurance does anything? I'm also not exactly sure what the liability is that I'd be trying to protect from if I was living in AirBNBs and not driving, although we might get a non-owners auto insurance policy.

Anyway, back to you... I'm not sure if this will help anyone answer your question, but what are you hoping to insure? You possessions in storage? The possessions you have with you? Liability in case something happens to someone when visiting you at your AirBNB? Damage to the AirBNB?

I think I'm mainly looking for liability coverage (in the event I damage something in the AirBnB), and perhaps some small coverage for the possessions that I keep with me.

Looking into this further, I found this article that suggests that the AirBnB host guarantee covers guest liability for damage to the AirBnB: https://insurify.com/blog/home-insurance/airbnb-insurance/

I think I'll try to verify this by reading the AirBnB fine print.

The travel blogger Nomadic Matt has a lot to say on this topic. Here's his main link on the topic:

Follow-up: Here's an article on what you can expect to be covered or not covered (obviously there's some variation by policy) and some suggested companies: https://www.nomadicmatt.com/travel-blogs/what-does-travel-insurance-cover/

Disclaimer: I haven't used these services myself.
