I've been a fan of Tim Ferriss for a long time, and just recently re-reading 4hrww. Wondered what everyone thought of taking multiple mini retirements throughout your career vs the ER thing that we all seem to want to do.
My Dad retired at 62 and he is 64 now and he is not really enjoying it, he is bored a lot, and thinks there has to be 'some thing more'. He even goes in to work 2 days a week (gets paid) just for something to do.
Any way, I have a cushy corp IT job, and I've thought about talking to them about extended time off (sabbatical) that way I can keep my job, but I've also thought about just taking a full year off, and looking for a job when I'm ready. There are a lot of IT jobs and Corp offices where I live, I feel pretty confident I could get a job in a reasonable time.
I have already saved up 300k, so I could afford to take a little time off from adding to the nest egg. My plan was to go to part time in the next year or two any way, and lower my savings rate. But, I think I like this plan better.
Also, I sell Insurance on the side and make about 20k doing that now, could be more if I wanted it to be. So, I can always fall back on that if I don't get a job right away. My plan during the year off is do some volunteer work in Costa Rica or Argentina (couple months at least). I have a wife and a 6 year old, so it's not just me, or I'd already have gone.
Anyone done anything similar, want to, think I'm crazy. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
