Precautions while selling a gift card
« on: October 12, 2017, 05:00:25 PM »
Hi
I'm selling a $100 toys r us gift card to someone in person. I've sold a few baby items to her before and she is interested in the gift card. What precautions should I take when selling it?

I'm thinking to meet her at the toys r us store, get the current balance, show her the balance and then sell to her in the store so she knows she is getting the right value and I don't get into any trouble later. Should I do anything else?

Bring a friend so there's a witness?

You should be able to check the balance online.  Show it to her (on smartphone/tablet or by means of a time-stamped printout immediately prior to your meeting), and get her to sign something to say that she accepts that the balance on the card is $X and that you have no further liability to her.

Only accept cash, and show the balance at the time of the transaction.

If you were running a business of this, you might want to consider some procedures, but for a one off?  Get your $80 or whatever in cash and leave it at that.
