Title: Picking a job
Post by: catmustache on May 24, 2017, 06:45:09 AM
If my goal is to retire in 5 to 10 years, does it make sense to stay somewhere pleasant and make less money?
How have you guys made decisions like this?

In your case, you need to determine what the new promotion actually means.  Is it a position you would still like?  Or would it be equally as demanding as the out-of-state job?  Is the pay going to match the out-of-state job?  If you already have an offer letter, you should go ahead and talk to your manager, and ask for specifics of this promotion.  There is no way you can make a proper decision without knowing the details of what your current company will offer.

You know your goal is FIRE.  So, whichever gets you to FIRE faster would be my choice.

If the pay and work load would be roughly equal, then you consider where you want to live for 5-10 years.

Let us know what you decide!  Good luck!
