Part time post-fire Gigs for physician
« on: December 13, 2018, 04:07:23 PM »
So here's my deal; I'm a physician looking to FIRE. I've got almost exactly what the 4%rule would support(but with almost no wiggle room),and I'm looking to stop practicing and do something else that still pays , but doesn't have any huge time commitments, and is still relatively fun. I'm 37, in pretty good shape, but no very handy, and live in Canada, (near niagara falls) My ideas so far include:dog walking, uber driver, working part time at a gym, kids sports referee. Anything medical that doesnt really require too much liability would be ok too. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Locum tenens is possible, depending on your specialty ( at least in the US - not sure about Canada).

Non-medical ideas: My plan is working part-time at a national park. Seems like it'd be fun.

Why not doing some occasional medical work? For example getting hired for a few days in a time that other medics are sick, like a substitute teacher? Of course this should be some gig that should not require large investments of licenses and schooling.

Another things could be to give  first aid courses, or other relevant courses. Or giving talks about your field. Maybe there is a company that does give such courses where you could be one of the people they call?

I'm not sure if this is as feasible in Canada as in the US, but here there's the option to review cases for insurance companies or evaluate disability claims.

Have you read MMM's article on being an Uber driver? If not, it's worth a read if you're considering that option.

Spoiler: show
TL;DR: he barely broke even when driving with Uber. After fuel and wear and tear, the hourly rate was quite low IIRC.

Give it a shot, but I wonder if you might be glorifying low skill/low pay work? I think a lot of people do this. See the whole barista Fire idea. I think it's similar to the people who glorify the past and "simpler times."  Work that you "have to" do pretty much just sucks, and the lower you're paid the less respect you'll get from those paying you. You'll also have to work a lot more at a near minimum wage job to have the same effect on your stash as just a little more work at a high wage job. As others have suggested, you might consider doctoring for a little bit longer, or picking up a bit of part time work in the medical field. You've got plenty of money to take a break, or to try to negotiate a better situation from a position of power, so maybe do one or both of those?

With your skills, why not volunteer 1-2 days per week at a Health Center for the indigent?

Most often, all liability is addressed by the Health Center, and you get to continue to practice medicine at your own pace while doing good for society.

This can be transitioned to actual paid work often times if you like them and they like you as well.

Does Canada have any ap/computer based medical appointment thingies?  Maybe you could pick up a few shifts that way.  (Clearly I don't know what I'm talking about except I know the US has something like this).

I would suggest medical marijuana referrals except Canada solved that problem.

As others have said, you'll make much more money with less effort in the medical field than in random minimum wage type jobs.

Most of our transcriptionists work from home, so that's always seemed like an option to me if I needed a post-FIRE gig.

In the U.S. insurance to practice medicine is kind of a buzz kill for part time work.

Here in my neiborhood there are about s billion pet sitters and dog walkers.

The low skill business opportunities are full up.

I don't know about Canada, but since you mention kids sports referee, you could look into the local school systems. My school district has high demand for after school program leaders, coaches, etc., that they pay community members to lead them (not a lot, but something). Subbing is also in high demand, and there are programs to transition from a career into teaching (and usually have opportunities for part-time teachers). I've also heard of folks going into teaching online/community college classes and enjoying it.

But really, at 4% SWR already, you should figure out what you want to do, ask for it/start doing it, and then arrange finances afterwards. Don't become an Uber driver if you don't absolutely LOVE driving strangers around all day (similarly, don't get into working with kids if you don't like kids).

I wouldn't rule out medical things entirely. Whatever caused you to be burned out on your career can be avoided if you are FI.

Consider looking into Functional Medicine or some other exciting aspect of cutting edge Integrative medicine. You might find a niche where you would be happy to practice part time.

Or maybe just work a couple shifts a month in an urgent care setting.

I wouldn't let your clinical skills completely as it could be difficult to get them back. Odds are if you find a setting you enjoy you would be happy to work a few days a month.

Thanks for all the input. I've got some thinking to do, but for now it looks like a combo of part time work and locums
