Part time job
« on: June 03, 2015, 06:23:50 PM »
Hubby is currently a stay at home dad working on a Master's degree. We have 3 kids, and they'll all be home during the summer (they're barely 3, 5, and 8, so not old enough to stay home alone yet).

I work until 3 each day. Hubby is looking to get a part time job at a tutoring center near our home.

Pros:
- It's near out home
- It works with my work schedule so we wouldn't need daycare
- It would give him additional teaching experience

Cons:
- It's not much money. In the ~10/hour range
- It's only a few hours a week. Is it worth it?

I'm going back on forth on whether or not it's "worth it." On the one hand, I know the experience would look good for his resume (he's been a stay at home dad for several years after leaving another field, so he doesn't have a lot of direct teaching type experience). He could make more money doing other things...even delivering pizza! We're not desperate for the money. It's only a couple hours a week.

What do you think? Worth it or not?

If he wants to, then it's worth it!  It's hard being home with kids all day.  If he'd like to spend some time working I say that sounds great.

the pros outweigh the cons and your cons are pretty weak.  Wish him well and let him do it

Is this job actually tutoring, or doing something else at this tutoring center?  $10/hr seems really low for tutoring.  He could try to put some ads on Craigslist and get $20-25/hr doing private gigs.

It's a tutoring job at a local tutoring center. Private tutors charge more like $25/hr, but it would be hard for him to get the private tutoring gigs without any real experience teaching or tutoring. Maybe after he tutors at the tutoring center (and completes his Masters) he'll have more options.

I charge $25 a hour for tutoring and I had ZERO experience tutoring before I started.  All I did was slap a craigslist ad up every day for about 4 days before I got my first hit.  After the first few people didn't believe how little I charged, I change my rate to $35 an hour.

Note:  If you go this route, watch out for scams where they want to send you a check or something similar.
