OMY syndrome or just in a good place
« on: February 20, 2021, 09:47:42 AM »
I’ve been planning early retirement for 20 years. Now I’m 50 with about $2.7 million net worth - expenses of about $70k per year.  My husband is 50 and retired and I work 30 hours a week making about $125,000 with benefits. And, with Covid I’m working from home which will continue post-Covid! Job is relatively low stress with just a few bad days here and there. I need to stay close to my elderly mother for now so unlikely my travel mobility would improve if I quit the job. My thought now is to just hang on to the job and take advantage of the freedom that part-time remote work offers. I’ve been pushing myself on that front to the extent I feel comfortable due to Covid restrictions - helping mom, reading, online classes, exercise, gardening, keeping up with friends remotely, learning guitar - and will start volunteering with local humane society soon.  Because I had a vision of being completely out of my career by now I feel like a bit of an early retirement failure but maybe things may have worked out better than I had even planned! Would be interested in this group’s input...do I have a form of OMY syndrome or have I arrived at FI heaven? Thanks!

You sound happy working.  Nothing wrong with that if it’s not detrimental to your health.  Continue working if you want but don’t confuse uncertainty/fear with an enjoyment of your job.

Past you is far less equipped to make decisions for present you than present you is.

Ignore anything and everything that a past version of yourself thought you should be doing in the present. That person no longer exists and their opinions aren't relevant.

Do what you want to do today. You are much, much wiser than your past self.

Yes I hope I am wiser now than I was at 30. Most days then I absolutely hated my job and couldn’t see how I would ever want to stay in the career if I had a chance to get out. Fortunately I didn’t burn any bridges. It was a mentor/ co-worker relationship I developed in that former position that led me down the circuitous route to my sweet part time job now. I see references to FU money on this forum - good to use the FU part of FU money sparingly!

There is absolutely no need for you to retire if you still like your work.

One day you will hit a wall and you’ll know it’s time to go. Probably you will have glimpses of that wall two years before you hit it.

I feel like OMY is more about money. Like, "OMY and my SWR only be 3.5% instead of 3.75%". It sounds like you are in a good place. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and all that.
